I've done this before. I bought a "bed-in-a-bag" and the dust ruffle was annoying to both of us and anyway ripped the second time I washed it (on accident, I swear!). The "bed-in-a-bag" came with an extra set of sheets and pillowcases (for only $80 total) so I put the second fitted sheet on the box spring and the first fitted sheet on the mattress and voila, clean lines, matching from pillows to almost floor level. We have to be able to see under our bed to be comfortable.

My hubby and I are both neat freaks and minimalists. The only thing I will do differently is make sure to buy nice quality sheets this time for my NEW bed and probably vary the patterns like a solid on solid sateen stripe or something, just for textural interest.

I'm also considering attaching some kind of border along the bottom where the elastic is like beads or pom poms that I've seen sold in ribbon lengths at Joann's, but ONLY if a) it still looks clean, b) is machine washable, and c) can be applied with iron on fabric fusing. I will not be bothered to sew when the whole idea of the sheet thing is e-a-s-y.

The second option I'm thinking we probably need more is to find dark straw baskets that fit under and use them for storage. a) more textural interest and b) extra storage...maybe for toys and extra linens.

By the way, dust skirts and ruffles seem harder to line up to me and stay lined up when putting your mattress back on? I found this easier to stay in place while doing so because of the elastic.
