Day 11: Try a Media Fast Apartment Therapy January Cure

Thank you Maxwell! This could be the mug I've been searching for. I've been looking to replace some mugs that I had gotten several years ago at the former store "Adhoc". Both the store and the mugs are long gone. I thought the maker was Arabia Finland but it looks very much like this one. They also had a whole line of the dishware.

I gave myself the big goal of painting the living room. I'm really undecisive when it comes to colors, I like so many different looks, white walls, light grey, dark grey but I decided to stay in the white family for the walls as everything else is so colorful ( orange/red colored modern scandinavian rug & orange couch). I'll look at some paint chips today and buy, if I can find them, those little sample sizes of paint from Benjamin Moore.
I only got to cleaning out the frig last night. I clean it when it's looking a little grungy, and mop up any spills immediately so it wasn't too bad, but I never knew the plastic grill at the bottom could be removed and washed and I could vacuum under the frig. OMG the cat fur! After it was all cleaned I had to keep opening the refrigerator to marvel at it's sparkling cleaness. I used a solution of vinegar and dish soap for cleaning. For the harder to clean spots, scrubbing with a dab of baking soda worked like a charm.

Having only one tiny closet in our apartment. I've been using a sturdy clothes rack . The clothes are contained in 3 large size canvas clothing bags hanging from the rack. The clothing bags protect them from dust, cooking smells and moths as well as making the whole arrangement look neater. I'd rather have a closet but for now this is a working solution.

Nicely done! I love the finished built in look that you've achieved with the mouldings. I also love the black finish. We have 3 of Ikea "Billy" bookcases, 2 of which we've owned for at least 10 years and the other for 3 years. The backs of the older ones fell off over time but there's no warping of the shelves. I do store the heaviest books on the bottom shelves.

I think I'll try to decide on a color (off white or light grey) for the living room (after 3 years of indecision) start the prep work for painting, also need to clean and paint all the dingy trim in the living room and kitchen. Picking a wall color will be a major accomplishment for me!

Living in NYC with it's excellent public transit I don't need a car and haven't had a license for over 20 years. My husband has a license and when a car is needed we rent it. We rent a vehicle for vacations, picking up large item purchases (home reno supplies, furniture, etc) and a couple of times during the summer we'll take a work day off, combining the beach, golf course and the mall in one day trip. Zip cars are great too, I have friends who have a membership and we sometimes share in the cost of a rental.

Day 3: Weekend Chores - Flowers, Floors, Green Cleaners & Outbox Apartment Therapy January Cure
1/4/13 8:55 PM

I love the "Cure"! I will be putting a vase of flowers on our landing strip, taking the 2 bags sitting in the "outbox" to the Salvation Army (luckily there is a SA right around the corner) and doing a deep vacuum, moving furniture to get those dust bunnies under the bureaus and bed. Those dust rabbits do proliferate!
Washing the floors with a vinegar/eco dishsoap/lavender oil solution. Need help finding an option for bleach to clean the cat box.

Just when I thought I had decided on a wall color I'm seeing these lovely white rooms. I love a certain white look, minimal furniture, pale woods, natural textures, linen, a mosquito net, bare bleached wood floors. Windows of course with lots of light. Looking out on the sea would be nice too. In winter some cozy throws in a natural wool, a flokati rug, a fireplace or wood burning stove.

In my home a growing bag of cords has been waiting for a few years to be desposed of in an enviromentally friendly way. Recently while working on a sewing project I found a practical use of them. I didn't have the material for a strap for the purse I was making, it was in the evening, the local fabric/craft store was closed and I really wanted to finish my project that night. While rooting around in my work room I came across the bag of cords and had the idea of using a cord for the strap. It worked out really well.

I've found that a body cream with a strong menthol scent works to repel mosquitoes. I'm a magnet for them and since I've been using the scented cream they have not bothered me.
For a bite remedy, I use a facial clay mask, just a dab, applied immediately after being bitten. It works like a charm to stop the itching. I believe it works by drawing the toxin out.

Mosquito coils! My father was in the Navy and we lived in Okinawa for a couple of years when I was a child. Hot, tropical and a mosquito haven. My parents would lite a mosquito coil in our bedroom during the night to keep them away. Yikes! I just remembered that they also used the now banned insecticide DDT!!!

My husband cooks and I clean.
I'm the slowest dish washer in the world. It takes me forever to wash and rinse every bit of soap off the dish. To solve this (and to conserve water) I got a countertop dishwasher for our small kitchen. The dishes go in while the pots and pans are in the sink getting prewashed by the discharge. After the wash cycle is finished I wash the pots and pans by hand. I also use that time listening to the radio to catch up on the day's news.
It's so nice to wake up to a clean kitchen.

Wow, been there just 6 months? You've accomplished a lot. I've been in my apartment for a year and still living with paint samples taped to the walls. I love what you did with a very tiny bedroom, the colors that you used there and in the kitchen are fabulous!

I live in a noisy apartment building. Our apartment is on the ground floor and people coming and going in and out, up and down the stairs is quite noisy. Our side of the wall that shares the hall is lined with three Ikea bookcases filled with books. These act as insulation and a barrier to sound. I've always collected books and my large collection works in a practical way, but I do constantly cull as new books come in.
