Having a small apartment helps - no place to stash useless stuff. Although if you're truly a hoarder I guess having a spot for everything isn't really a concern. Can you imagine how much money gets spent on all that junk?

What do people think about white floors? I'm thinking about it, but I'm afraid it will be too hard to keep clean. Even light wood floors show every speck of dust and cat hair.

Maybe bamboo roller shade? bamboo outdoor shade? We had something similar in my last apartment that we got from home depot, but we didn't mount it as nicely.

Easyenough,

Unless someone reports you (any neighbors who might want to blackmail you?) I don't think the city can find out. If someone does report you, an inspector will come out and fine you $2000 per violation. Since any work done without a permit is illegal construction whether up to code or not, I guess each permit you should have gotten is considered a violation? You may have to pay a portion of the fee you would have paid for the permits. Consider yourself lucky -- in some cities, they make you undo all the work and start over!

Easyenough,

Unless someone reports you to the city for doing work without a permit, I don't think they have any way of finding out. If someone does report you, an inspector will come out and fine you $2000 per violation (according to the DCRA website) even if the work is up to code. Any work done without a required permit is considered illegal construction. So I guess each permit you should have gotten counts as a violation? You may also have to pay a portion of the fee you would paid for the proper permits. But that's lucky -- in some cities, you have to undo all the work if you get caught!

It's similar to the Eugene sofa from Room and Board:
http://www.roomandboard.com/rnb/product.do?method=get&id=562093&coll=90514148&cat=91552821
But it's $949 and $999 for the 71" and 86", respectively. And it has an extra leg in the center which kind of bothers me.

PhredYammers - me too! I bought this machine last week for frozen yogurt, but I only make a little at a time because frogurt just doesn't re-freeze well. If I want two servings of dessert, I need to factor in a loss of about 1/2 a serving stuck to the bowl. But otherwise, a very good machine.

Why does year-round green and artificially maintained lawns have to be the only acceptable front yard? And I'm slightly offended -- we have all kinds of landscaping in our neighborhood an I can assure you it is not "decaying".

Will it fit under my workstation? Or are you supposed to take it into the conference room?

I love cool, pale silvery grays as well. It compliments the sofa while still being neutral enough to add in pops of color in your accessories.

I bought a Crate and Barrel sofa online from the clearance section after I had obsessively searched in vain for about 3 months. It was one that I fell in love with in the catalog but never got a chance to see in person, but I read some rave reviews on this website (thanks to whoever blogged about their Kinsey sofa 2 years ago). So I made the leap of faith and I absolutely love it! But without reading people's opinions of it here, I would never have bought it sight unseen.

I like mixing contrasting wood colors. But you have a LOT of light wood. I would leave the table as is, paint the chairs white or another bright color for some pop, and seriously think about painting your kitchen cabinets white as well. In fact I would do that before doing anything with the furniture.

designgurl,

Parsons might be a good design school but they are very proud of the fact that their interior design program is NOT accredited.

Leanne,

Unfortunately interior design is a relatively new field, still trying to find a generally accepted definition and boundaries as a profession. So unlike architecture, interior design education varies widely from school to school and most all (commercial) interior designers get a bachelors degree. Graduate programs are few and focus more on research, not professional practice. Most second career designers go the bachelors degree route.

SD913, wallpaper usually goes above a chair rail because the wall below it traditionally has wood paneling.

Definitely unbalanced -- things that are too 'equal' look static and more boring. There's a design rule that things in multiples (rows of lights, framed photos, etc.) should be in odd numbers for the same reason.

Rachel, I've made a few table tops out of cypress and haven't found anything that keeps it looking exactly like the beautiful original color. Polyurethane is the closest to clear I've found, and is better for wet areas like a bar top, but it does go slightly yellow. My favorite finish is tung oil, which keeps the wood looking more natural and hand-rubbed, but it turns wood colors slightly more red. I prefer this to yellow, especially for more reddish woods like mahogany and cypress. In the end I left my table tops completely bare. Good luck!

My first apartment when I got married 3 years ago was a tiny but adorable garage apartment in a beautiful old neighborhood, but we had to move on because it didn't have a real kitchen and I love to cook. We had a hard time moving our furniture up the narrow and oddly angled stairs tucked under a low sloped ceiling, and found it utterly impossible to get the sofa out. We tried every possible way and even put a hole in the wall trying. (Yes, yes, how does something fit in but not out, we stayed up for nights plagued by this engineering problem.) Luckily the next tenant wanted to keep it so we just left it there. Unless the owners of the house want to dismantle the sofa or drop it out the window, it's going to be there for many more tentants!

well, these people did it in less than 300 square feet:

http://www2.oprah.com/foodhome/home/decorating/slide/20070220/decor_20070220_350_212.jhtml

They built in a ton of storage space around the walls. But they spend a lot of time outside the apartment with the baby since they live in such a great neighborhood.
