Hmmm. Dirt is of course dirty, but did you know that it is also contains bacteria which activates serotonin in the brain, causing a natural anti-depressant effect? Unhappy hipsters, take note.

My mom likes to make a salad with jicama, orange chunks, and pomegranate seeds over a bed of greens, which is very yummy, and very pretty. One of the tastiest (and most unusual) salads I have had was persimmon and jalapeno. The two bring out each other's flavors like you would not believe. On the savory side, I love me a good Salade Nicoise with perfect potatoes, waxy green beans, tangy capers and tuna/anchovies.

It's a shame that most "canned" fish is still sold in metal tins, which I try to avoid. Why not sell them in glass jars like some of the Italian products?

My tip is a little counter-intuitive, but works and is non-toxic. I find that the oily patches on my stove are easily cleaned up with a little olive oil and some elbow grease. Buff with a clean cloth when done.

I haven't been able to use these for any recipes because my teenage daughter always finds them in the pantry first and devours them as an after-school snack, straight out of the jar.

I think it's so dumb when grocery stores segregate the "healthy food" to its own section. Just put crackers with crackers, "milks" with milks, etc. Then again, I get pissed off because mineral water and water are never on the same aisle either.

It's hard to believe now, but I did the exact same thing for years, and I actually grew to love my pull-out couch/bed, not that I would go back to it! I agree with many here, tween and teen kids take up a lot more room, physically and emotionally ;)

I would move into the friend-rented place as a stepping stone. You'll save some money by paying cheaper rent and can take some time to re-evaluate what your ideal place is, and then hopefully find it in a few months or a year. If you are in good communication with your friend/landlord, this should work out well for all involved.

I bought one of these and returned it after one night. It is like having a small sun in the room! I am very light sensitive and couldn't deal with the incredible amount of illumination they put out. I suspect some of the heat is psychic-you will feel as if you are laying on the beach somewhere with one of these things...

I've seen the hanging plastic bag trick all over New Mexico and it works, but yeah, it looks pretty trashy. This is so much nicer! I wonder if the flies also dislike hanging crystals???

This method does work well, the only thing I would do differently is wash, THEN cut (or preferably not cut at all until ready to use). I'm not a germaphobe by any means, but the knife slicing through delicate greens can carry microbes from the less permeable outer parts into the membranes.

I spent the weekend picking MacArthur avocados (very creamy) in Santa Barbara for Backyard Harvest (www.backyardharvest.org). The orchard had recently sold, so the current crop had not been commercially harvested but needed to be picked to ensure next year's crop. Several thousand pounds went to local food banks for distribution.

The name of the pillows hint at it, but it's probably worth noting these pillows "borrow" their design from the painter Chris Johanson.

This gave me an idea: I've been saving & trying to figure out how to use leftover rice cake crumbles-maybe a mini gluten free panade...I wonder if it would get too soggy? Time for a kitchen experiment ;)

I stayed in one of the Kauai Bamboo homes last June. It was beautiful and perfectly tropical feeling (http://www.bamboovalleyfarm.com).

One note: these are prefabs that are made in Vietnam and shipped/assembled on site, so not totally green/sustainable in that they must be freighted halfway around the world. There are bamboo growers on Kauai and elsewhere in Hawaii, though...
