I'd love to know more about replacing a refrigerator as well. My husband and I are in the market for a new one as well- we have white appliances and are looking for topfridge/lower freezer with no ice maker or water feature. A plain ol' refrigerator. I'll be checking back to see what others have to say. Best Advice (and Brand Recommendations) for Downsizing to a New Refrigerator? Good Questions |

@SRIVANIS- I don't peel my rhubarb for anything unless there is a string hanging off it while cleaning it- I'll pull the one stringy peice but don't peel the rest. Sharp knife is the key to stringless rhubarb. Classic Recipe: Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Recipes from The Kitchn |

My sister lives a stones throw from a small strawberry farm that is a u-pick farm which is typically picked over within a week or so of being ready. She gets a call from the lady who owns the place when they are just about ready and we always go pick early. Last year, we picked over 20 pounds and made wonderful jam. I am down to my last pint. Just waiting for the phone call to go pick! Bigger and Blander: What's Up With Strawberries?NPR |

I find this interesting- and maybe some other readers have this happen to them as well; I don't get brain freeze, I get back-freeze....odd, I know. When I eat something extremely cold (ice cream, ice, etc) instead of my head aching from it- I get a back ache! It only lasts as long as a typical brain freeze would, but my back instead. And if you are allowed to pull out the unit and build a new one, I'd suggest lowering the unit all together and build it as a place to sit rather than display dishes. Maybe build a place for wine storage on one end and shelving for books on another. Make it a window seat with a pad and showcase the window with pratical storage underneight. If they are in rough condition, don't fear the floor under it- you can always frame the bottom of the floor, build a platform to cover the floor and then put in some truely amazing built-in's yourself- if you are handy. Buy some great trim, trim the fronts of your shelving- if you are patient, you could create some really beautiful shelves. If you are renting, ask your landlord. And measure twice. Cut once. FamousAmos- I would go with the 24" if you have the space for it. And spend a little extra for a nice model that runs quietly. Otherwise, if your kitchen is near your living space, you will be competing with the tv (if you have one) with volume. Living Alone with a Dishwasher Cooking for One |

Maybe we use a lot of dishes, but my husband and I also fill a full sized dishwasher each day. I do a lot of scratch cooking so I make several dirty dishes, but I tend to just pop one of those power tab things in the cleaner each time I empty it, and I start it almost every morning before we leave for work- it runs during the day (I set the timer) and then I put them away while I'm starting dinner that evening. I'm a 'clean as you go' type, so I like to pick up as I'm cooking. And I dish wash almost everything I can as long as it says its safe to do so. Living Alone with a Dishwasher Cooking for One |

As a piano player, I LOVE that the piano is in the kitchen. The only downside- I'd NEVER get anything done! I sit down at mine and have to be peeled away from it. I love playing the piano! However, as mentioned in the CL article, I suppose if it is out in the open for people, they will play it then. However, this makes an excellent dream for me some day! The video is hilarious. I find that when my husband and I go to ikea, we have caffeine in the car, have food for the in-store experience (either brought with us, or stop in for lunch) and shop just the two of us together (going with other family/friends becomes a suicide mission) If we stay hopped up on caffeine and have a full belly, we're all set and can make great shopping decisions and leave happy. If not, unfortunately it leads to melt downs and the infamous "Didn't you write it down?" Breaking Up In IKEA |

I hear you EMB343 and ALISON6971, but as a it is just me and my husband and who doesn't want to polish off an entire batch of cookies within a week (who likes stale cookies anyway?) so I bake a dozen at a time. I drop the cookies onto a cookie sheet with wax paper layerd on it, and flash freeze. Then I dump them all (minus one or two frozen cookie dough balls that get eaten) into a freezer bag. I can't tell you how many times we've had guests that drop by and I have nothing for them, so I pop them in the oven and in 10 minutes there are fresh baked cookies. I grow garlic every year in my garden. So easy. I bought some great bulbs origionally to invest in a strain I preferred, but now, I have tons of garlic every year. My stalks are already 6 inches high from planting last fall and a mild michigan winter. Grow Garlic! So easy and not alot of space is needed! :) Powerful Pantry Staple: GarlicIngredient Spotlight |

When I was a kid, we raised hens, and I will do it again when we have the opportunity and space to do so. (Our neighborhood doesn't allow it) The mean time, I buy eggs from a lady at work, coming home with 2-3 dozen a week (She charges $2 a dozen) I do all my baking and almost all my cooking from scratch, so it is easy to blow through a bunch of eggs. This year, she is raising meat chickens as well, and she has reserved 6 for me. I can not wait! Home-Raised Eggs: Raising Chickens and Putting an Egg on Everything |

@MSTARK08- if you have that many eggs, share the wealth! I buy eggs weekly from a lady at work at $2 a dozen. She has several hens, and she constantly has an overflow of eggs. Sell them! I never, and I mean never buy them from the store. Growing up having hens, I don't like the store bought eggs- say what you will, but they are just not the same! Making Hard-Cooked Eggs? I have an excessive amount of cookie cutters- some might say..too many. I have mostly metal, but a serious collection. Everything from numbers, the alphabet, tons of shapes- and although some of you might laugh, I can honeslty say I've used almost all of them at least once (some are more popular than others, especially at Christmas time). I store them all in one of those large tupperware containers like a 5 gallon one. My husband laughs when I dig through them for a shape because it sounds like I'm digging through Legos. (I yet have to organize the shapes- I only have the letters and numbers in bags, stored in the container). Tip: Store Cookie Cutters Stacked on a Paper Towel Holder |

I don't know what neighborhoods you are living in, but in mine- heck, there was no including utilities, water, cable, etc, included in the rent. There was no benefit to renting versus owning, My husband and I rented one side of a duplex before we bought a house- and renting a short 8 months was long enough. The unit was new, the land lord was dandy- it just wasn't our bag. We lived next to the woods, which was great- except that the yard was covered in ticks. The snow removal, etc, everything else that is mentioned here- sure our land lord would come plow the driveway- but my husband loves his snowblower. We almost had our basement flood when the sump pump failed our first winter there (caught it just in time) and sure a land lord would have had to take care of the issue if we rented our home- but seriously, we love our house and our neighborhood! Wouldn't change it for the world. There is just something about knowing this place is "mine" (and if I want to paint the walls 100 different colors, I can) What Amazing Perks Do You Have as a Renter? When I finally finished the last can of "cream of whatever" I had in the pantry, I voed to not bring it home. There are so many great ways to make the "creamy" of whatever- infact last weekend I made pot pie and use my home canned chicken stock with herbs, salt, butter and flour, cooked until thick- it was delicious in the pie. I am not denying that it is good (infact I I'll still eat it at family gatherings, etc) but somethings aren't just what they used to be.
