Hello, all! Question-poster here. Thank you so much for your answers! We do own our home, so permanent solutions are possible.

Unfortunately, it's not in a very good spot for a landing strip - it's in the center of the room, at least 10 feet away from any exterior door (the door in the picture goes to our above-the-garage room). The construction is strange - it's only about 4 inches deep, and the only backing is a very thin piece of plywood that separates it from the garage. Whoever installed it cut through a stud to do so, so in order to get a truly flat bottom I'd have to install one.

A chalkboard might be a great temporary solution, as I've always wanted to try one and I think the ledge might collect some of the dust. I also love Alana's idea about a hinged painting and spy hole - it would have to be one of a set of 3 large pieces, though, for it to be symmetrical enough for my taste. But the wall does need some art.

All else fails, I can drywall it. :)

I'm pretty sure the sets on Amazon and Umbra's site are not magnetic, though Amazon mentions something about a "magnetic conversion kit."

I've had bad luck with 3M strips, myself. Especially if your landlord uses cheap paint, removal can really tear up the wall.

ok, I'm sorry to be that commenter, but seriously: the commas in this post are out of control.

Some people (myself included) enjoy the occasional excuse to throw a party, MrFaux. Don't rain on my parade...or cookoff, for that matter. Especially when it gives me a chance that my pie will be declared the tastiest. ;)

Types of summer heat vary a bit by geographic location. Here the humidity is worse than the heat - really, I'm not just saying that! I bought a portable dehumidifier two years ago for my allergies and it sucks a half gallon of water out of the air every day in the summer. I love the fresh air, but I find that unless it's unseasonably cold or I just can't resist, it's more efficient to seal up the house, set the thermostat to 80, turn on some fans, and drain the moisture from the air. But what works here may not work there!

If you DO buy your soap in bulk (as I do), this setup is perfect. Just replace the lid with another ring and top when you need to refill and take it to the store.

NOT A SPAMMER: Consider buying identity theft insurance or restoration coverage, which provides you with an agency to clear up identity theft problems. I can't vouch for my policy, as I haven't had a claim yet, but I have an acquaintance who had his identity stolen TWICE - and the second time, with his coverage, it was a lot easier. It at least gives me a ton of piece of mind up front, and it's pretty inexpensive.

Oh, and here's my question: Any secret to keeping smoothies fresh in the fridge? I love them for breakfast but hate getting up early to make them...and dirtying my food processor for a single smoothie.

@DrBetty: Plain instant oatmeal is the same as old-fashioned oatmeal, just chopped into tinier pieces so it cooks faster. That is, unless your brand mixes it with sugar or dry milk for some reason. But I keep a box of plain instant oatmeal and some dried fruit at work all the time.

There are already a bajillion comments on this post, but I use my microwave every day. In southern Missouri from June until August, you couldn't PAY me to turn on the stove. It's just not happening.

AngelaDee76, I think you either mean "homey" or "comely," not "homely." I like the look, and appreciate that the absence of cabinets allows more space for windows. Perhaps if there was at least upper cabinets in some part of the kitchen, or, as aychihuahua points out, a spacious pantry. Otherwise, there's no way I could justify all that empty wall space.

I agree - I'm all for incorporating books into rooms, even if that means cutting holes in useless ones. I think there are many beautiful ways to do it. This is not one of them.

Wonderful! I love the sentimentality of a quilt on the bed, but it usually doesn't mesh with my other modern design preferences. These are gorgeous.

I save vegetable scraps in a gallon-sized bag in the freezer (carrot peels, slightly-too-squishy tomatoes, the woody ends of asparagus). I also drain/rinse canned vegetables into this bag. When I have a full bag, I dump it all in a big pot with a few onions and make vegetable stock. THEN I compost the vegetables.
