Having lived in apartments for many years, whereby I did not have much of a choice in decor, except for bedroom pieces, this article brought a smile. I wish that I had done something even as close to this! I know live in a shoebox 1940's place in an industrial neighborhood near to the ocean. A myriad of possibilities. I went with cottage/bungalow with craftsman-style touches. Gold walls for neutral warmth, darkly stained wood side tables, brown seating, and eclectic steam-punk nautical artwork/sculptures.

I am an avid collector of "stuff" to put on tables and am constantly having to edit myself. I noticed right away that I felt the stuff was cluttering the table tops, although they were elegantly arranged.

I am also looking for ideas! Constantly. I use plants as a decorating accessory as well, to soften and liven up the space (boxy is body is boxy).

Overall I thought the space was cute, but cluttered.

Commenting on the theoretical design faux pas (rather than commenting on friends homes)
I am a plant lover, and good with them, so the fake plant thing is a "design allergie". Others include, but are not limited to:
- area rugs over carpet
- vinyl anything (blinds, etc) if you have to have them, frame with fabric drapings
- Ive noticed everyone (on apartment therapy) seems to be doing the "decorate with books" thing. I am over it! Piles of books on the floor, even if color coordinated, is ...over.
- I dont think dirtyness is a design element, so Ill skip that one, but since I have 4 cats and one long-haired dog, I am looking for removal options...any suggestions?
- dark forest green carpeting over wood.
- neon beer/liquor signs, shot glass, beer glass collections used to decorate
- bed/mattress on the floor
- cinderblock tables and book cases
- old painted wicker furniture that is flaking
- super girlie, lacy with flowery wall paper, and lace doily-style table coverings
- linoleum floors anywhere
- popcorn ceilings
- electronics everywhere
- zero art on the walls (even stock photography of something common is better than nothing!!!!!)

And over here in the central coast of California, in a wonderful location in Big Sur, is the Spirit Nests, created at the Spirit Garden, by a local man named Jason Fann:

#1. I really liked the before picture (in fact I thought it actually was the after picture until I read further), but I really appreciate the after. The author/designer/homeowner stated that she knew the old furnishings would work, but wanted to completely have an all new look that was modern through and through, rather than modern/eclectic.

#2. I love the green with yellow bag. I think that I would have liked a little more color like that in accents, as well as some additional modern art. There are so many great artists out there, affordable too!

#3. I thought the natural oak rather than dark-stained oak brightened up the space quite a bit. I think that there is a window - I love staring out the window, and for myself would have placed the desk near to it so I could stare outside.

#4. I do love the straight edge of the cabinets and the exposure of recessed lighting really brightens up the room

#5. The new desk and chair really indicate with complete certainty that the style of this room is modern. I agree with a previous comment - with time and usage more personality layers will emerge - more art, family pictures, etc.

#6. I made sure to read the comment policy!

I have a wonderful corner in the living room, one side is the end of a couch looking onto the garde, and the other is a small chair with an outlet, looking towards another part of the garden - both with windows. I find that I have a hard time concentrating without unobstructed windows. I get antsy!

I definitely think the doll heads are creepy, though.

I have a collection that has potential creep-out: I collect animal bones from the nearby beaches. I have a seagull skull, a few vertibraes, and I have them displayed around the house. :D

Another advantage to green on the walls is that it is supposed to be the most complimentary color for any type of artwork, so you can change things up, without having to paint all over again.

I like the openness of the white, which is also very calming. Id also like to see the wide expanse of walls utlized, maybe with a mirror or one large statement piece, or a large grouping of small personal items.

I didnt know paint chips were such a hot art item these days. I guess that boat sailed right past me unnoticed, as I myself would prefer a painted version for color exploration. Or maybey something inspired by rothko.

OK, one more, because threes the charm - who didnt just adore the all-white and ominous apartment in "Fatal Attraction", contrasted with the homey family apartment?

And, along the lines of Edward Scissorhands, is Hogwarts Castle of Harry Potter fame.

I would like to add "Sleepless in Seattle", to the above (which I totally agree with, especially "Somethings Gotta Give") which features not one by TWO great houses - one a vintage little apartment with antique stove, the other a modern houseboat in Washington, all open floorplan and open water.

Love this idea - where I live (near the beach), there are always odd planks of seadrifting wood, sometimes natural sometimes not.

My question is: how did they get afixed to the wall? Is this a permanent display or a panel that is removable?
