We've lived in Oakland for 8 years now and my husband grew up over here. First we had a loft in Jack London Square, and now we own a home in Temescal. This article is true in that there is a lot to love about Oakland but I'd be remiss if I didn't also mention that there is a lot of problems here too. For over two years now our neighborhood has been plagued with break-ins, robberies, assaults with deadly weapons, and shoot-outs between Oakland and Berkeley drug dealers. The police can't do anything about it because they are seriously hampered by budget cuts and incompetence. It's a known fact that police are so overwhelmed in Oakland that they are no longer responding to 911 calls unless there is imminent threat of death, and even then ... not so much. So yeah, it's great to be able to have quick access to transportation, great food, nature, and everything this article mentions, but if I had to do it all over again I would not have bought in Temescal. And unless you're renting, neighborhoods like Rockridge, Piedmont, Crocker Highlands, and Montclair are NOT affordable.

sparkle - that color is Behr's Tropical Skies. We color-matched to use Ralph Lauren paint since we don't actually like the coverage BEHR provides.

aande4414 - the table & chairs are from Cost Plus World Market. They are always on sale, so you should definitely keep an eye out. They're solid wood and really well made.
