i like benjamin moore's sleigh bells for the walls. it's kinda green, kinda blue, kinda gray and perfect with deep brown. i'd add some breezy white sheers on both windows hung way up high. and i'd reconfigure the furniture—flank one of the windows with a barrister bookcase on either side. then pull out the white sofa from the wall a bit. lose the gray sofa and rug (sell on craigslist and use the money to buy two chairs instead). ps—love the ship!

so this might seem counterintuitive, but i would paint the wall behind your sofa flint by benjamin moore. it's a deep charcoal with a lot of navy undertones. i did a quick photoshop mock for you, which you can see here: http://shootingallens.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/brickroom.jpg

i also added a fiddle leaf fig in the corner. it's large and fresh and has a great organic shape.

keep us posted on what you do. love a fun before and after!

remember when televisions first came out and their box was actually a beautiful piece of wood furniture? i realize we don't keep tvs as long as they did in the good old days, but you'd think some furniture designer would have teamed up with an electronics company to make something beautiful by now. or maybe we just deal with ugly tvs for a few more years until google glass or something like it becomes the norm.

a large painters canvas between the head of your bed and the wall could make for a fun headboard. you could cover it in your favorite fabric or paint it yourself. they make amazing clip on lights you could fasten right to it (and run the cord down the back). i'd hang three fun geometric mobiles at staggered heights with some airplants (https://www.etsy.com/listing/115500065/brass-himmeli-plant-holder-prism?ref=sr_gallery_16&ga_search_query=geometric+mobile&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=all&ga_facet=geometric+mobile) above the head. then i'd likely do three lightweight gallery-wrapped canvases on the long wall so if they fall off they won't hurt you. you can find fantastic ones at society6—how about three from this guy? http://society6.com/artist/replaceface.

paint the door and under part of the overhang a deep navy blue. get an inexpensive barnyard-style down light ($45ish at home depot) and hang a bright yellow wreath over the window.

Where Can I Find a Similar Low, White Platform Bed? Good Questions

we just bought the malm twin beds in white for our 4-year-old twin boys. we are using regular twin mattresses and boxsprings with them and they look just adorable. the boys love walking on the side "balance beams" or driving their toy cars up and down them—and i love how neat and tidy they look together in the room. and for $89? they can outgrow them next year if they want.

i loved this post and wanted to share one of the greatest art experiences i've had to date.

six years ago i had a corporate function in new york city. my husband and i traveled up from atlanta for the long weekend. on saturday, the planned activity got rained out. with nothing to do, we had this crazy idea that it would be fun to call up a georgia-born, brooklyn-based artist we had heard about to see if we could stop by his studio to see some of his art in person.

we looked up his number and called. he answered his phone and invited us over to take a look. we took a long train ride out to brooklyn in the pouring down rain. the artist, rodney white, met us at the station and we all ran through the wet to his studio. it was amazing. we were standing in the middle of his apartment (!!) surrounded by his beautiful art. we picked a piece right off his wall. it was so exciting.

we weren't expecting to buy anything, so we didn't have near enough money nor our checkbook on us. he agreed to meet us later that night at a bar in the city. we showed up at the bar, check in hand, for the largest art purchase of our lives up to that point. we handed over our check and our address and he promised to ship our new painting to atlanta that monday. after the transaction, we all hung out drinking beers and watching argentina play during the world cup. it was thrilling! who knew such talented artists could be so cool and fun to hang out with? i mean, he totally didn't have to waste his whole saturday night with us, but i'm glad he did.

our original painting arrived at our house shortly after we returned home. honestly, i couldn't care less if it ever improves in value—we just love it—but for rodney's sake i hope it does.

if you're curious, here's a link to our painting: http://rodney-white.com/galleries/#/galleries/south-wall/bewhole . you can also read about rodney at that site.

Good Questions

we have our 3.5-year-old twins sleeping in toddler beds. they've been in them a little over a year now and have just started complaining that their beds are too small. the boys are on the tiny side (3rd and 14th percentile) and they are starting to look a little bit large in their beds. i was hoping to have them in toddler beds long enough to bridge the gap until we can do bunkbeds, but am now rethinking that plan. they aren't sleeping well these days—they end up in our bed in the middle of the night more times than not, but who can blame them? i'd rather be on a proper mattress than a plastic-coated crib one, too! so now we are talking with santa about bringing twin beds for christmas.
