I'm in love with the first room. For me, the 'banana yellow drapes' get my attention and then I look around the room and notice how fabulous everything it is. It's very sophisticate without looking like your mother's living room. I also like buying furniture that I want to have for a long time in neutral colors. This technique works beautifully. I usually remove my shoes when I go into someone else's home- unless their house seems dirty... I would like for people to remove their shoes when they come into my home, but I don't risk being a bad host/ making guests uncomfortable and asking them to do so. For a party however, where people get dressed up I want them to leave their shoes on. I love fashion. I can clean my floors. But if someone's raggedy stilettos are damaging my hardwood, I might have to produce my butterfly knife... I'm just sayin' Etiquette at Home: Solutions to The Great Shoe Debate |

I like registries as long as the couple keeps it tasteful. I was put off when I opened an invite for an upcoming wedding and three store registry cards fell out of the envelope before I could read the invitation. The couple registered for so much stuff (that I know they wouldn't buy for themselves or anyone else) it was obnoxious. Meanwhile, the wedding is on a Friday at 3 pm at a budget place... Just keep it classy whatever you do. Making a House a Home Through a Wedding Registry |

My parents have had the set in #6 for over thirty years. The chair seats come off easily for changing up the covering. Love it. All Tucked In: Hans Olsen's Super Space-Saving Dining Set |

Gasp! I can start buying cloves of garlic again instead of the kind that's already crushed in a jar with olive oil. This is monumental! Smart Tip: Peel an Entire Head of Garlic in 10 Seconds Saveur |

Congratulations to the handsome couple! I think small weddings are the best. I just got an invite to a wedding where I know the couple is trouble affording it, and not one, not two, but three registry notices fell out before I could open the actual invite.. As a kid I loved pink. Then for some reason in my teens and early twenties, I tried to fight it. I'm back in love with it, and will probably paint my kitchen pink very soon. I like a soft, but noticeable pink (No. 1,3-5). The pink in #2 makes me think the decorator was too shy or nervous about a more noticeable shade of pink. I go whenever I want because it's only 30 minutes away (College Park, MD location). I used to go for kicks, but now I only go for something specific. I just beeline to it, bypassing the same old same old. Going a lot lets me see how much stuff is there I don't need. Ikea is smart not to have stores everywhere. Most people don't live close to one and probably get excited/impulse buy when they make that long trip. The IKEA Habit: Need vs. Want |

I just spotted some lovely stumps from a tree my neighbnor cut down. Think I'l swing by and grab some. How do you dry them? Does the bark come off on its own once the stump is dry? I like the smooth look. Beautiful & Useful: Tree Stumps at Home |

I live in DC in the Hillcrest neighborhood. It's unfortunate that so many people still have negative views of SE. A lot of gentrifiers are discovering the the geographical and financial benefits of SE compared to the rest of D.C. Hillcrest is actually one of D.C.s best kept secrets. It's a quiet, well a maintained residential area. D.C. is a major metropolitan area and you should be alert/safe wherever you go. I wouldn't rule out this option just because it's in SE. I would check out that listing if I were a tourist on a budget. 10 Getaways Under $75 a Night |
