Find a rug or bedding you are in LOVE with and use them as inspiration for jumping into some color. (bedding would be cheaper... if it was me, I'd have colorful bedding and a good quality neutral sea grass rug. You'll have the rug for years and you can use it in other rooms as your household changes. look somewhere like overstock for thayt) Like other comments, I think you could move your bed so the windows are to the side of it, not behind.

Curtains wouldn't go amiss either, you can get a good pressure rod by umbra, they look great and like "permanent" hardware if you can't put holes in the walls.

If you have a piece of art that you love or that has always spoken to you, you might look at some of the colors in it as inspiration as well.

If you don't have art that you love at the moment, or perhaps not for the bedroom, consider getting some artist canvases (or just one) on sale from somewhere like blick and cover them with cloth you like, or spray paint them or it a soothing color and poke white led string lights through it or just hang it simply painted. These have the benefit of being your wall art if you choose to leave it at that, or being placeholders while you work on the rest of the room and contemplate what you really want up on those walls... also, it dampens the acoustics and makes for a quieter room.

If you do spray paint the canvas, leave them to air a couple days before putting them up so you're not putting fumes immediately into your sleeping area.

You can reuse such canvasees for lots of things int he future.

Some nice seagrass storage baskets above your closet will maximize your storage space, further help with acoustics and give a nice finishing touch to the place.

Easy Entertaining Idea: Foil Packet Dinners

Be careful about what you let come in contact with the foil, perhaps to get a good seal you want to use foil, but you might wrap your food in parchment and then that packet in foil. Certain ingredients can be reactive with foil and not good eats.

Nice catch on the dessert fork, you guys! Lovely setting. I don't do that sort of thing every day, but it is a nice thing to do on occasion. And as a person who is usually too casual for fancy settings, it's actually a nice conversation starter at the beginning of dinner! "I usually don't set places like this, so it was hard to remember but then it came back to me it goes like this....(order)"... and people start talking about their experiences at posh dinners or their home ec class or first whatever.... at least that's the way it has worked out for me and at the in-laws....

How to Set a Table Properly Style Me Pretty

take two flour tortillas (make sure they are pretty uniform in size, if using the lovely hand made ones)
Place in a large skillet over low-medium heat
when bottom tortilla is warmed, flip tortillas over together as if they were filled
flip top tortilla over (the side that was on the hot skillet is now facing inside)
wait a few seconds
flip both tortillas over again
flip top tortilla over
wait a few seconds
flip both tortillas over again
flip top tortilla over
spray top tortilla w canola oil spray and sprinkle very lightly with salt
flip both tortillas over (your oiled, salted side of that tortilla is now in contact with the skillet)
quickly remove top tortilla, place your fillings in.
If you're using filling other than just cheese, put a layer of cheese down, then your other fillings then some more cheese. (melted cheese is your glue)
Put that top tortilla back on (you don't want it to cool too much)
spray the outside lightly with oil and sprinkle lightly with salt.
when cheese is melty and you can safely do so, carefully flip
you can riase the heat a little now
flip it once more if you like!

You should wind up with a crispy, blistery, delicious quesadilla with a difference!

when checking the other sites, compare PRICES too. I rashly bought a set of windsor chairs for $170 off one of the flash sites(that rhymes with fun flings brain) (which said the pair would have been $700), not only did I later find the same brand and color chair pair on overstock for LESS, the quality was crap. If I was in a store and this pair was retail $170, it would be too much.

I'm a big devotee of spray painting, but I am with the others, you could probably get some money for them and buy something you like or buy something with the same profile to spray paint and still have some change left.

you could throw some lovely fabric over them and put glass topper on top of that until you have a room in which you want to use them as is...

That is an awesome piece. I also love the driftwood color. I've not read through all the comments, so please forgive me if this is duplication, but you might consider coating it with a clear wax? I'd text it on a discreet area first.

The earlier suggestion of kantha I think would look lovely with the weathered wood. And as you have the expertise to change it when the mood strikes, you don't have to worry about the possible "trendiness" of it.

Jealous of your freebie!

I keep them all. Well, some years ago I threw away the ratty dust jacket from my first TS Eliot book and I still feel a pang of regret every time I look at the now naked tome.

To keep them from getting ratty and also from annoying me, I remove the dust jacket from the book when I am reading it, and put it back on when I return the book to the shelf.

This is actually unexpectedly useful! I have the bad (?) habit of reading a few books at the same time and having a second visual reminder of one of my books in process can help keep me reading. Or if I am dusting my office and find I am dusting the jacket of Scagboys for the 3rd time, I can ask myself if I am really ever going to finish reading it (the phonetic Scottish vernacular makes for tough bedtime reading if like me you are unused to it!).

The contention was that the fashion of forks did not effect our evolution in the last 250 years. On the subject of forks, try a broader search than wiki and north america. On the subject of evolution, I encourage you to read a little more overall. It is a fascinating and complex subject. A brief look at photos of skulls from various parts of the world disproves the amusing assertion of this piece.

If I found that measuring cup in a thrift store, I might buy it to use as is as a little vase, or spray paint it and use it as a container. Just because something has outlived its usefulness for you, doesn't mean it is garbage or can't be useful to someone else. I'm not talking about torn and worn clothing or a broken plate. This vessel is still a vessel and it can be very useful to someone else.

I'd leave it. Use the left portion as a rail for extra towels. Someone has surgery or something, you'll be grateful for it. (Has happened twice in our household in 4 years and we're young and healthy.)

If you REALLY feel like you want to get rid of it to make the place your own, I'd leave it till the end of all your other decorating (that which is outside of that bathroom) and then when it comes time to do it, see how important it remains to you.

I've not read all the replies, so pls forgive if someone has already said this. I was in a gallery recently and to hide their little storage area, they had sliding "panels" of thin burlap or Chilewich type material. The fabric was hung simply enough, only a piece of metal at top and bottom to give it some rigidity. It slid side to side on what was basically like a tiny little sliding door track. I was all - WHERE DID YOU GET THIS AMAZING THING!!?!?! Because in my last place I needed exactly that kind of thing and couple never find it. His answer - IKEA. Said it was super cheap too. Check it out!

Or, like another user mentioned, inexpensive room dividers. You can find some cheap ones on overstock and places like that. I'm using one right now to hide an enormous air intake vent someone bizarrely decided to put in the middle of the dining room wall.

If you have a good relationship with your landlord, the suggestion someone else made of putting like closet doors on the alcove could actually be good for him/her too. You never know until you ask, (cautiously, nicely)... maybe take a trip to the lowes or whatever in your area and price them. Then you can say - would you consider putting doors on? _____ has them and they would cost $_____ . You doing a big of the legwork and knowing the price would be more persuasive, assuming they are very busy. Or say you looked at the doors and they cost _____, if you put them in, you'd be leaving them with the place - is it an idea they like, if so can you take it off your rent?

That is if your landlord is approachable! Good luck.

Yay! These are the world's most wonderful lentils. So lovely. You just want to be quiet and eat them and contemplate their texture and loveliness. I'm not even a vegetarian!

I've only been able to find them at DiBruno's in Philly so far (I sadly no longer live in philly) - and they don't sell them on their website. Thanks for the link! I will be replenishing my supply with all speed.

My New Favorite Ingredient: Special Tiny Lentils from Umbria

use it for everything! I love love LOVE mine. Did not have an awesome sister to buy me one and had been coveting one for YEARS. I took a course in a culinary school last year and the dutch ovens were used on stove top for just about everything. After the course, I pulled the trigger on one and have been so happy. I am currently enjoying a very lovely lentil and mushroom soup made in the dutch oven (the base of which is a homemade stock I made in the dutch oven the day before!)

Braises, sautes, chicken pot pie... roasted veg... nom nom nom nom.... sky's the limit!

I like the idea of a reading nook, but you could also have a little bar-let in there... I see a pair of heavy ceiling to floor curtains to frame the opening (and to draw when you just want to hide in there with a book and a glass of wine!) ....a good comfy chair and footstool... a tiny table for your glass and book... shelves packed with books and objet ... and a small tiered glass and metal drinks cart in the opposite corner of the nook.

It will have a reflective quality and add to the feeling of opulence, while giving you the bar space everyone is suggesting.

Give yourself a nice relaxing and indulgent space!
