I live in a beautiful city, considered to be the American Riviera. We have the ocean and the mountains, but the income level is considerably lower than the rent. For many people that I know, 30% is hardly manageable, especially if you have a family to care for. I'm more like 50%, and I have to drive as we have limited public transportation. Blerg. My current city, Santa Barbara, should definitely be on this list. Two bedrooms are easily $1900/mo at least from what I've experienced. I suppose because we have UCSB to figure in, it brings the "average" payments down somewhat. I'm coming to the realization that living here is not affordable and even though I grew up here and have lived in California most of my life, it may be time to jump ship. I easily spend half of my earnings on providing shelter for myself and my 2 kiddos. Kinda ridiculous considering that earnings and potential for earning is so low in this neck of the woods. I also forgot to mention that having something like TripIt on your phone is much easier (for me) than sending myself an email with details. I like that multiple travellers can also be included so I can keep track of when others arrive, etc. Don't Forget: Checklist for Making the Perfect Getaway |

hmmm. very topical as I'm packing for a trip this Friday. I never thought of the "letting the mattress air out" thing, but it's not a bad idea. I always forget to unplug kitchen appliances, but I don't use most of them daily so it slips my mind! Don't Forget: Checklist for Making the Perfect Getaway |

oh yeah, forgot to mention that I found a pair of Heywood cat-eye chairs on the street that I saved from an oncoming storm. Wanted to keep them but I don't have any room. Sold them on CL for far less than their worth. Also found a Thonet tubular chrome chair on the street that I have considered recovering - but might just sell on ebay. 1stdibs has them listed as $3500/set of 4 but I only have one. I used to have that exact same coffee table as in this photo - an old boyfriend's parents had given it to us because they no longer liked it. Unfortunately, the day we moved into our new apartment, the couch tipped over and shattered all the glass. I should have just replaced the glass but somehow the base became something else... what a great home! I love seeing features on my home town (the place I grew up and still live in!). Santa Barbara is truly a magical place where residents are lucky to be inspired by the surf and the mountains! Robin's Beachy Chic Abode Green Tour |

just received my multi-bubble from West Elm yesterday. I can't wait to hang and fill it up. I've been decorating with Tillandsias as long as I can remember since my dad has collected both those and bromeliads for many years. Inspiration: Hang Air Plants in Glass Bubbles |

loving the orange chesterfield too. who knew it would look good with peachy-pink chairs (which look almost exactly like a pair my grandparents had). we've got an orange couch and I'm desperately trying to decide what color to re-do the chairs and not clash... Hmm. Even though this isn't our floor plan - this is giving me some ideas at least. We have an awkward living room space to say the least - it's long and narrow, has a nook where I suppose a TV should go and a fireplace in the corner, plus it doubles as a living/dining room for us. We tried to do a quick drawing mock-up before we moved in, but once we got there we didn't like any of the ideas. After a year of living there, we still feel like we've got a decent layout, but the addition of a newly found Eames lounger has really thrown things off!! 10 Ways to Furnish & Layout 100 Square Feet |

Grüner is definitely a favorite around our house. It's great in summer or even in cooler months with some spicy food! I love it with food or on it's own. I've had some trouble sleuthing it out in our parts, but I did find some at Whole Foods and then a new label at my local cheese shop just today! Grüner Veltliner: Austria’s Most Popular White Wine |

since they don't come in sizes larger than a full, it would be easy to get a cheap IKEA duvet, use permanent fabric markers to draw on the notebook print and then color away with markers they sell on the site!! The Doodle Duvet Cover: Drawing In Bed Just Got Cooler |

I've been a reader of Hilda's blog for a while. She has a great eye, great thrift scores and beautiful photography! It's a nice treat to see her home featured on AT and I can only imagine how amazingly she would outfit a larger place. Definitely a contender for smallcool.
