My brother uses an old stereo cabinet as a bar; it holds almost all of his scotch collection, plus there's room for glasses where the records would have gone.

Okay, the placement of the handles is driving me nuts (doesn't line up with the pattern!), but this is a beautiful paint job and a great inspiration.

I made these for a work potluck and they were a great hit, I might try adding chopped walnuts to the filling next time, and maybe use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls.

Climbing ivy can damage house facades, and ground ivy might attract rats, who like to make their burrows in it. I'd personally ditch the ivy, although it can work if you're willing to put in the maintenance.
For the steps, I'd look into sealing and painting. A more expensive option could be to tile. Many houses in Denver have decorative tiles on the risers, which I always liked.

I love the table - that idea is definitely going in my inspiration file.

Lovely.
And almost completely off topic, I want to recommend Lucy Maria Boston's Green Knowe books to whoever in your house reads YA fiction. Recent editions have covers done by the same artist who did the Lemony Snicket books. The best part is still what's inside the covers, though.

I am in love with all the gorgeous woodwork in your house. Did you refinish it all or were you lucky enough to get it in that condition?

I love everything except for how the light is hard wired. Why would you not either attach it to the ceiling like normal, or at least have the plate so it's not cutting the stripe like that. It's just a huge visual interruption for me.

I live in the SF Bay Area, and people post free Scobies on Craiglist pretty frequently. I'd do that or ask my hippie friends if they had a commection before I'd buy a kit. Of course, I'm pretty much the opposite of a germaphobe.

There's a product called Sugru that's great for this kind of thing. I've used it to make a custom stopper for my larger than normal sink drain.

Most art supply stores will have fabric dyes. For that particular brand you can go here http://www.jacquardproducts.com/stores/index.php?PrId=dyPMX
to find out where you can buy it.

my mom always used them as a filter for our washing machine runoff. This was for an older one that drained into a laundry tub with a big black hose.

How To Recycle or Reuse Old Tights?
Good Question

1/20/11 1:06 PM

I think zero waste in this case is just zero landfill contributions. Recycling is definitely included. On another note, I found out that the single stream recycling in my county doesn't actually recycle everything - people are paid to sort out the good stuff at a depot, and the rest goes to the landfill after all. We should all be doing what this family is doing.

Good post, I've been thinking about doing some of this already, since my street is a magnet for dumping. I'm curious, where was the photo taken? It reminds me of Philadelphia, where I grew up.
