We've kept our "kid plates" in an accessible cupboard or drawer since our first was 18months old. It has been a life saver. He can set the table himself, unload his dishes from the dishwasher, help get meals and snacks ready etc. We recently moved the rest of the dishes to the next drawer up and now that he's 4 he can set the table for both adults and kids, help unload the dishwasher and be an even bigger part of our kitchen activities!

FYI - These are almost certainly crochet. Also, it would be awesome to use some of the lonely crochet table clothes, doilies and afghans that are at the thrift shop to cover the shades

I second Starfrit Lock&Lock containers. My 3yo son can open them very easily. We have the smaller rectangular ones which hold a sandwich and still have room on the side for fruit, crackers etc. I just wrap the sandwich in wax paper to keep everything separate. I also have the larger rectangular ones for hubby's lunch (same footprint just deeper), they both have the same size lid to keep everything sane! I've found that the little plastic Gerber babyfood boxes fit inside the smaller Lock'nLock containers perfectly to keep things like dip, yogurt etc. with minimal leakage.

These fit nicely inside our So Young Mother lunch bags, with room for other snacks in a fabric/velcro snack bag.

For drinks we have Kleen Kanteen bottles in 12oz size. 3yo has sport cap which he can open and fully close on his own, 1yo has sippy lid which is surprisingly leak resistant.

Wow I love all the great ideas! I also agree that tying chores and money together isn't a great idea, but I also think that kids can learn great work ethic by having an opportunity to earn. My husband grew up in a house where helping out was expected, and he received a separate small weekly allowance but. . . there was also a list of additional "chores" that could be done for money (eg; 10cents to sweep the front porch).
This gave him the opportunity to work hard to save up for things like video games that would have been far out of his reach with just his regular allowance. Today my husband speaks often about how his parents raised him to respect the value of a dollar, and that hard work can get you what you want!

I'm not surprised that this specific sling has been recalled, as the loose, low carry has always struck me as a hazard.

I do hope however that this recall does not turn parents off of slings all together. As a mother who carried her son in various slings and carriers from the time he was 3 days old I know that slings can be a save and effective way to give new babies the snuggle time they need while allowing parents the freedom to move and get things done!

It's all about awareness and using your carrier properly. Check out the BabyWearer for great advice and resources on wearing your baby close! http://www.thebabywearer.com/

I agree - I'm not really seeing the point of putting a big piece of plexiglass over the kitchen table. I could sort of see making a big deal of protecting an antique, or seriously valuable table (mid-century teak that you bought before the kids came along?), but I think most parents - us and many of our friends at least - have resigned ourselves to an easy to wipe, moderately inexpensive, yet decent looking table until our children are teenagers! We might be in the minority though.

Also, I've always found the table top the easiest part to clean, our problem is with the edges and underneath where our 2year old secretly smears applesauce and peanut butter when we're not looking!
