Wow, you are hard group to please. I don't think the budget in the second one is that crazy.

Hmoog fabric is beautiful and hand made: My piece may have cost $10 but I had to travel to SE Asia to get it. Compared to the cost of air ticket, $45 is not that much. The work and texture is beautiful: I don't care how clever you are, you can't make a Hmong pillow out of old T-shirts.

And sometimes, like the rug, it's a good idea to get the good stuff.

I understand that people want low cost options but not everything (especially hand made) can be had at Target prices.

BTW, it looks great! It has a sweet cottage vibe. . .

I have one in my nursery and I love it! I did the same thing as TammyE and put a sheepskin on it. I'm small, and my kid was also small. (For the freshly post partum stage, I used a Swiss Ball. The ball became a foot rest later). It may not be for everyone, but if you are small, it works great!

Here it is on AT:

I don't hate this -- there are a few details (like the ski wall) that are clever. I think that it might look pretty dated in a few years. I can't imagine living with all this is 5 years times.

Can anyone tell me the source of the light in the first photo? It looks like a Ingo Mauer's Zettel'z but with different pictures.

Here is what worked for us: we took in the used stuff and and tried it with the kid. Any thing that didn't work was passed along to another baby.

Pre-baby, I never ever would have imagined my life would include a garish Fisher price swing and later a jumper. We intended all natural fibers and wooden toys. However, she loved the swing (she would not sleep without it) and the jumper is must have. I am so glad I gave them a try-- as it allowed me to pee in peace!

As someone who lives in a builder grade Colonial, I was inspired by the house and love the cute family. I love what they did with it. I too could not afford what I really wanted (quirky modernist house-- they are well over $1M in my area), so I got the one I have. I nearly cried the day I moved in. But I've grown to love my home.

Yes, it's a suburban house. But its fabulously energy efficient with a new(ish) roof for my solar panels. And it's been a really fun challenge to try to make the house my own.

I think many of these comments are ridiculous and mean. There are 5 members of this family so each person lives in 600sq ft. I know plenty of single people who live in energy inefficient 1000 sq in Boston-- but no one would attack them on AT.

Moreover, I'd like to know what people think we should do with McMansions? No one should *ever* live with them? Even if you burn them to the ground, the costs of building a new smaller house would mean a huge foot print.

One more thing-- so there are more than few cute family pictures. Big deal. Does it really ruin your day that much? REALLY?

In short: I love this house. Lots of great ideas, and applicable for the AT audience.

Ex academic here-- I also use Billy book shelves and group by topic (and within each subtopic, alphabetical by author).

I found that keeping the shelf height uniform across the room makes the space look uncluttered.

Here is our book depository.

It used be exclusively a library study, but then we had a kid, so we had to move back into it. Someday we will re-do our basement so we can have dedicated study space again.

I always thought my house "must" be a quirky-cool-modern-architectural-gem, but that comes with a hefty price tag. I settled for a builder grade center front colonial (yes, some of my friends still find this hilarious), but one that had excellent energy efficiency and sound construction. I've spend my pennies slowly upgrading the rather boring interior to my taste.

It's a project, but I'm happy.

What 'Must-Haves' Did You Let Go Of When Buying Your First Home?
4/9/12 2:45 PM

@bagelsmom

I replaced the glass with plastic for pictures near the crib (the plastic from some yard sale frames fit perfectly). . . and then used hooks and velcro.

However for smaller frames away from the crib, I used the velco things. And I think I put them on all four corners as paranoid first time mother. They really work great-- I have them all over the house.

You can see how I used them here:

(the crib is pulled away from the wall in real life!)

I'm taking a picture a day of the Kiddo (it's my parents first grandchild) in her first year (she's 6m old now). I created a 5x5 grid on Blurb so I could get plenty of photos per page. It's really interesting to see her progress when photos are in a row-- even "blah" cell phone pix are interesting in context. And it will be a fantastic gift for grandparents!

We never used our rocker (a great looking Eames knock off) -- however the Swiss Ball got tons of use (she liked up-down motions than back and forth). I keep hoping all the bouncing toned my abs ;-). I used the ball at night and the couch during the day. The swiss ball is still used for crunches and is loved by my nieces and nephews (my daughter is too small still for that). I know this is sublimely unhelpful, but every kid is different. If you can, I would try borrowing a glider.
