A great cook's knife (balanced and the right length and weight for the individual) and a steel.

Regular exercise and a podcast/audiobook. Total darkness is a plus too, France has converted me to her black-out shuttered sleep style.

Seconding the imitation crab sticks. I try not to even look at the scarily long ingredient list.

Let's call a spade a spade and admit that this is not fondue! Call it a dip, call it a sauce, whatever.

Vegan foods and lifestyle wood be so much more appealing to everyone (esp.non-vegans) without these deceptive monikers.

Can't stand home frangrances and most scented candles are just not my thing. I swear by papier d'armenie. It is a deordorizing incense paper that smells lovely and smoky but never lingers too long. Otherwise, I love woodless Japanese incense, very delicate.

When I first moved to France I remember the kid in me having a field day when I saw how many chocolatey things were available here for breakfast. Now it just seems normal to me. I love some dark chocolate chopped and sprinkled on a good bowl of oat meal, but just a tiny bit - a little goes a long way.

Another vote for a pressure cooker week. Here in France it is THE appliance gifted to all young adults leaving the nest. Everyone loves them here and I am getting to love the one my belle lère gave to my partner and that he never touched! ^^ Definitely great for beans and stock - I've also had delicious meat dishes cooked just from the recipe book that came with the cooker!

@DCarl1 - pass along your dal recipe? Sounds delicious!!

New whetstone user here. Very happy with the results and it takes up very little space - there was just no way I was getting one more appliance into my tiny kitchen.

Any information on whole (aka uncut, unrolled) oats? I live in France and can only find quick cooking in the British foods section of our hypermarché or whole, uncut oats at the organic co-op... I'd like to give the whole ones a try but don't know anything about them!

I've been making a version of this salad for a while and love it. My tweaks: adding toasted sunflower seeds and dried cranberries to the salad and a mix or orange and lemon juice to the dressing (instead of vinegar). So good!

Another Camembert recipe (savory) I've picked up here in France, is Camembert rôti. Roasted Camembert served with potatoes and a thick slab of bacon (lard, in French) and sprinkled with lardons. Served with salad with a nice vinegary dressing to counter the fatty cheese and lots of country bread to dip with!

I'm with ya mintychip1; I'm #7 on the list - the overcrowded utensil drawer. My only drawer in my lil eurokitchen. Looking for ideas about this too because its a furnished rental. I'd LOVE love love to install a metal bar with S-hooks, but alas, no holes can be made in the walls. :( What to do?
