The by-color and alphabetically are very tempting, but I'd run into the problem of room. Most of my tpbs are stacked vertically to make room for the hardcovers/oversized pbs.

I need to redo my shelves though. Right now it's a loose 'by genre' configuration, grouped by author, and by size, sort of.

Depending on how much time and energy you want to spend, the other ideas here are great - or too involved.

If I wanted to do a quick update, I'd start by taking down the wall art which definitely dates the room.
Lose the throw, or fold it over the back of the chair.

If you'd like to keep the general color scheme, keep the shades and dresser the same, but buy a new comforter set in the green of the dresser trim. Try something solid, or without a busy pattern.
Definitely a set with some pillow cases and/or shims.

A new lamp shade in red.

If you're terribly attached to the paintings or just don't want to buy new art right away, try moving the large one of the vase of flowers to above the dresser, and spacing the other three apart like this: | - |

Looks like a blanket chest at the end of the end? If the fabric isn't just a blanket on top that can be put inside, you might want to re-upholster it with something more sleek.
