shantiquax, fungus gnats are a little different than fruit flies, but they can be stopped. You can buy beneficial nematodes at most garden stores- you just mix with water and pour into the soil of the infected house plants. They eat the gnats' eggs & larvae so they never get airborne. If the gnats get really bad, sometimes I just repot the whole plant and get rid of as much of the old potting soil as I can.

Hope that helps!

Hi everyone
My husband and I are so happy that our little project got noticed by Apartment Therapy.

To answer the question about the components, yes the base unit is an Ivar from Ikea. The add-on was made out of poplar and birch plywood, which we picked up at Discount Builder's Supply. It has a really nice grain.

I helped Martin design the hack based on what we needed to store, mainly a lot of spices and as many of the often-used kitchen utensils as we could manage. The picture doesn't show it, but the stove is just a few feet away, directly opposite the spices. It's really handy to have everything within reach now. He cut the individual pieces, I sanded and gave everything several good coats of clear poly, then we assembled the pieces with nails and screws and attached it to the inside of the Ivar supports.

We've had the Ivar for several years, so I'm not sure what we paid for it; including the pegs for the utensils and the towel rack, the whole add-on cost about $50. The side walls hide most everything from view when you are in our living area, although the towels do tend to stick out a little.

Living in a rental apartment that's about 800 sq (yet mysteriously came equipped with 2 bathrooms) has really been a challenge- thanks again for the encouragement AT!

I've started using the extra lemons from our backyard tree to clean my shower stall doors- just cut open a lemon, dip in backing soda and scrub down. The reaction of the baking soda and the lemon's acid cute through the soap scum on the glass.

As a former framer, I would estimate that the frame job you are describing would actually cost you more here in our fair city if you are looking for an actual oak frame (if it just has to look like oak, that's a different story).

You could build the frame yourself if you are comfortable with woodworking and have access to saws and routers and such- that is nearly always the cheapest option. Builder's Hardware Supply sells molding that is good for making frames with. Otherwise thrift stores and places like SCRAP often have nice frames that just need some love.

Frame shops that do their work on site will usually sell you a piece of glass cut to size, and as for the rest of the supplies I think you could get them at most art stores- like Dick Blick, Pearl, or Flax.

There's always Cheap Pete's too.

If attracting ladybugs fails, or if the aphid problem is already out of control when you move in, one batch of ladybugs from a garden store will solve the aphid problem in about a day. I'm not sure what the environmental problems are with this method, as I know the ladybugs are often collected in the mountains, but it really does work. Those little ladies are really hungry when they wake up.
