We used a product we found called the "M Brace" to build a few raised beds on our patio. They're simple steel corners that you easily slide boards into - no tools were required! Since we put our beds on a concrete patio, we also lined them with plastic (with a few holes punched for drainage) to help contain the dirt. http://artofthegarden.net/

if salting your boiling water for flavor, also salt the ice water! otherwise, the simple rules of osmosis will remove most of the salt from the veggies while their in the ice bath.

I had a similar set up in my kitchen with a big open space above the stove. I installed metal shelving from IKEA and got some hooks to hang pots and stuff. I love the way it looks and everything is sooooo accessible. It also frees up cupboard space to have your pots and pans on a hanging rack. As for meals splattering on the pots, if you hang it high enough, everything will be in reach and your cookware will remain clean. Mine does anyway! Good luck!

As a server in a fine dining restaurant I will always allow the guest to determine whether a new bottle is corked through the taste I pour. If they think it's corked I smell and and taste it and bring it to our sommelier to taste and smell as well. Of course, I also bring a new bottle to the table right away (which hopefully is not corked as well!). I've worked at this particular restaurant for a nearly a year and have only experienced a handful of corked bottles (one of which I had ordered myself while dining at my restaurant!).

Final note: the taste a server pours for you is not meant for you to determine whether you like the wine or not! It's only to determine if it's corked. Use the knowledge of your server or sommelier to help you select a wine you will like based on your personal tastes or food pairings! I'm always happy to make recommendations to my guests!

Simple rule of osmosis: You should also salt the ice-water you shock the vegetables in or all the seasoning you added to the boiling water will just seep right back out!
