Oh the plushness!! Could barely get past the plants, the yummy rugs, all the goings on in the kitchen (!) only to find...a piano. Le sigh...I miss SF... :)

I have followed Apartment Therapy daily from the very beginning. I rarely comment but over the years, it has begun to disturb me how territorial folks become about the direction of this site or design in general. I love design but not more than human beings. I think the main purpose of design is really to inspire, to beautify and to uplift with creativity and the best way to do that is to BE inspirational, to BE beautiful in thought and action and to UPlift others around you. The ways to do this in life are unlimited - and a personal creative challenge. It's okay to have strong point of view and to share it but when we let that eclipse basic human kindness, we're really missing the point and then design becomes soooo soulless, soooo limiting, soooo unFUN. Aim Higher everyone! It's still a great community and there is room for everyone.

Love what you all have done with your "compact casa"! Such a great feel and flow and a major accomplishment to have made a rather standard tiled bathroom so appealing. House tour? ;}

I'm finishing up a reno of a Palm Springs midcentury and actually used 3 different types of white Caesarstone in there. 15 ft Credenza in Blizzard, kitchen countertops in Quartz Reflections and Organic White in baths. I actually used the organic white b/c I got remnants for cheaper. You can't tell the difference too much but it helps to avoid the "cookie cutter" look. I love the matte honed look also but was steered away due to maintenance and have had no issues with chips or stains with my shiny stuff. (I balanced it out w/ low profile matte cabinets.) I'm also super rough on stuff and they hold up to some very crazy orange kitties. (the grasscloth, not so well.) ;} When they first installed the kitchen I saw the shiny flecks and freaked over my disco ball counters. People really seem to like them & 2 years later, I actually love it and wish I'd been bolder!

Just bought a new place (this time a 40s house) and would like to use quartz again but try for a more marbled or at least whimsical look. I've had good luck with CaesarStone but I agree it can be a big bland looking - almost too "tasteful". Haven't seen in person but was checking out the other sites quickly and Zodiac, SileStone and Cambria had some really exciting textures and finishes.

HOWEVER, make sure your installer is good. There are wildly varying levels of skill in beveling, seams, etc.

Wow. Pretty timely. Just literally bought a little bungalow that just so happens to be missing most of her wall in front, making it pretty exposed to the street. It's my first project on the list and what I thought was a pretty simple deal has turned out to be lot more involved that I first thought (cost, permit, design-wise.) I was literally sitting down to get some inspiration and saw this post. As a single person who bought this with an intention of getting into something more "family and community friendly" and dealing with some of the trepidation this step entails, this is a fascinating post and I find it no accident that I ended up somewhere giving me the opportunity to contemplate and happily create this for myself. Great post! ;}

Well done! Much cleaner and brighter. The tenant will be able to make it their own - which is part of the fun. As someone dipping a toe into the investment property pool after my own first lengthy (& sometimes overly spendy) reno of a fixer I appreciate these (and all) types of features about keeping things within reasonable means. Owner or renter, it just ain't fun to be housepoor. :(
