Funnily, I had an old (in all meanings of the word) friend over for drinks recently. I made him a Sazerac Rye Old Fashioned, which he liked. Then he asked if I had any of the old guy, which I did. Made him an Old Fashioned with the Old Overholt and his smile was brilliant.
Unlike a lot of "affordable" brands with modern, expensive competition, the old guy really is preferable for a lot of people with taste.

I played with this a year ago when I hit a streak of always being egg-less when I wanted whites.
And I worked harder at keeping eggs in stock after that.
Aside from the soapy taste, which I bet is less noticeable in the heavy, syrupy-tasting drinks of the Dark Ages, the foam created is nowhere near as rich and robust in texture as real whites.
