sure it would be cheaper and easier, but you would be able to reuse this fabric version next year and not have to get the tape-sticky off your window. also, if you have nasty metal venetian blinds like mine and all california rentals seem to have, this covers them up well.

my kids have IKEA loft beds, they sleep below and store lightweight but bulky things in flat wicker baskets on top. They have curtains hanging on the sides and are very cozy and lovely inside.

Taking advantage of our status as homeschoolers and going to all the attractions that are suddenly vacant of local schoolkids but are still open for "bumper" tourist season.

sorry, the neighborhoods always look very nice and cozy. Just finally decided that the NW is not the place for me.

Good that you love your neighborhood.
I have lived in Seattle (including a stint in a lovely house in Ravenna) off and on for 38 years. I am done with it now, finding the people to be (in general) as chilly and dour as the weather, though the houses can be pretty and the n.

the answer for us was one giant bed until each kids asked for their own bed, around 4 or 5 years old. Now they come sleep with us occasional mornings, but it was a totally natural transition. This is only OK if you are down with co-sleeping, I am not advocating for it as general principle but it worked well for us. I have recently heard co-sleeping described as a "nightly slumber party with your favorite people"

We only need privacy for one thing, and that one thing is usually more fun outside the bedroom anyhow :P

I have a rug this size that I love but is too small for central placement in the living room. I have put it at various times at the end of the bed, under a small seating of 2 chairs and a card table in the kitchen, and now I have it where I would suggest to put yours: in the space between the living room and kitchen, rotated 90 degrees. It will help break up the space between the rooms and help enlarge the space.
I also am a fan of your chairs, but the face-to-face arrangement they are in with the couch is very confrontational right now.... remind me of the dreaded "family meetings" of my youth :).
White laminate expidit will totally overwhelm this space, in my opinion. please look for something smaller.
also, this room need height- perhaps a taller case to enclose the TV and some art, shelves, coat rack, tall or hanging plant, anything to pull your eye upward.

sorry, but some of these would have caused me lasting psychological scars! Let your kids pick out the art for themselves.

sitting on the floor is great if you live in a place where you never host visitors that are not even willing to take off the shoes at the door. As we live in America (even though in California) we gotta have chairs.

our 2 kids share a room, and although they are small, they still are both clotheshorses who have defined ideas about what to wear. Inside their fairly standard small closet (18"x36") we put four sets of 1x8 boards on all three walls in a u-shape, with a hanging rod beneath and baskets for socks on the floor. put a chair underneath for them to climb and get the clothes they want and a clamp-on shop light so they can see.
This is SO much easier to keep organized (for me) and to use (for the kids) than the typical hanging rod-big bin of sloppy clothes or separate bureau for the kid clothes. and it cost around $20.

our kids (boy and girl) share a room, and they have their toys and games in a separate room that serves as a guest room for our frequent out-of-town visitors. It works very well, I should add that our kids are 18 months apart and have always shared a room. I think we could do quite well without the guest room, even, it is a bit of luxury for the grandparents and uncles and aunties.
No need to bust the kids out into their own discrete cells, not that long ago we humans were putting all the kids in one bed.

Post script:

could you do a feature on shared kid rooms with mixed genders? that would rock. Ours looks very boring right now.

I will confess now to taking my Italian renaissance fresco textbook to the paint store when choosing colors for my new house (in a Mediterranean climate zone). I actually have an apple green kitchen, salmon living room, Naples yellow dining room and lavender bedroom :)

We gave up our earnest money on a house because of the cat smell- the inspector did not smell it but the place had an indoor cat with no visible litterbox and cat food cans on the roof.
I would calculate the SF of the closet and ask for that % off your rent until the damage is fixed, at least!
cat stink is the ultimate deal-breaker for me. And I have 2 cats.

I never understand this phenomenon of dirty windows everywhere new I move, I always clean them before I leave- helps sell a house, and when renting, makes the landlord think it's cleaner on move-out :)

have this advice from a good friend (who happens to be a plumber) Please don't use your fingers to smooth caulking joints, it will cause the caulk to mildew much faster than normal. Wear a glove while smoothing the line.

We have a 4 and 6 year old, one girl, one boy, and we use the ikea Kura bed as well- they both sleep on the bottom bunk, the beds are pushed together in a corner so they overlap in an "L" formation. We have twin size futons as mattresses in there. It's a little kid cave that they both requested, totally not my idea. The kids sleep with their heads together, and sometimes end up snuggled together, sometimes just holding hands, sometimes rolled out onto the floor!
They are very active sleepers, and very close to each other, so this gives the best option for thrashing/rolling around space or closeness.
They use the top of the bed for a reading lounge.
