My mother never used a plastic bag...always said "paper" at the grocery store (this was way before anyone was using reusable bags), and then that paper bag became the trash bag for the next few days.

I tested this out after being inspired by your post, and I definitely have some healthy looking onions growing in my backyard! Photos here: http://literallyorganized.blogspot.com/2010/04/simple-fixes-part-1-garden-hose.html

You had me at popcorn. I pop my corn on the stove and melt my butter there as well. I disagree with the poster who said you have to be picky with you kernels. I just use Jiffy white corn kernels and they all pop all the time. There's more about my popcorn habits here http://literallyorganized.blogspot.com/2010/03/recipe-tip-stove-top-popcorn.html

How about any of the Babysitter's Club girls or Dorothy Gale from Oz. I also loved Anastasia -- A Girl Called Al was a favorite.

I am not a parent, but if you really want you kid to learn geography when he's older, get him these Read a Mat Eat and Learn placemats. They may not be as cute as the one in this post, but man, after years of staring at this thing I know my countries, states and capitals!

There's a shallot in this picture, and I have to say that my favorite salad dressing comes from a recent edition of Everyday Food that involves adding a chopped shallot and some other stuff to the ingredients listed above. Shallots, and some dried oregano (or fresh, if you have it) and some honey. So good!

I completely agree with Palmetto. I've been using my own homemade cleaners for the last year or two, but I still have some lingering products from before I went DIY. It always seems like a better option to keep what you have once you've made the initial purchase. Don't buy it again, but don't get rid of it either. It was produced, you bought it, now use it up.

Great post! One question: you said "Mail that might need to be shredded before it's recycled goes in the second slot." I have always wondered about whether or not you can recycle shredded paper. My online research indicated you cannot. Do you have a different answer? I'd love to be able to recycle shredded paper because I'm a diligent shredder! Thanks!
