Gorgeous! I know they're trying to prevent scratches to those beautiful floors, but there has to be a better-looking solution for the Eames' LCW.

I would hate to think what people would put in those vases.

At the risk of being annoying, TSPInteriorDesign, I think what you probably meant to say was "voila" - the French exclamation for "see there," "there it is", etc., not "wah-lah". There is a word in the Philippine language, Tagalog, "wala" which translates to "nothing" "there is none".

For small approximate measurements, I find my finger spread (jazz hands, from tip of pinkie to tip of thumb) useful. For most people it's 7 - 8 inches. And I get the small retractable measuring tapes all the time from the company that makes our corporate promo materials (for free!). I have them stashed everywhere: several purses, the glove compartments in both cars, junk drawer in the kitchen, etc.

Many vintage electric fixtures had no shades at all. Since electricity was relatively new to the general public, homes built during that time period tended to highlight the bare light bulb. Oh and the ring on your fixture may be purely decorative, mimicking the gas lighting fixtures that predated it. So your landlord is probably staying true to the era of the building rather than being quirky.

I suggest clip on shades, but look for ones that have straight sides to avoid that "up side down" look. The Lamps Plus web site had a few (www.lampsplus.com).

U-Haul refers to that "upper-most space" as "Mom's Attic®" and it's meant for fragile items. I've had my fair share of helping friends move, and one friend's dad in particular, I remember, kept telling me to put stuff there. "Just put that box of dishes in Mom's Attic." Took me a good part of the moving day to figure out he meant the truck and not the house!
