The scattered, sprawling nature of much of America's cities (suburbs) makes preservation more difficult because of the isolated and island-like context; unless we are in a big, established city, most people spot architectural gems in a sea of strip malls, parking lots, and commercial buildings (or a single preserved "Main St.") that follow the same design aesthetic of quickly-built, cheap, and utilitarian. In a compact and dense urban center, there is a context and community fabric that impels city dwellers to care more deeply about the architecture, because it is the stage upon which they live their lives. In addition to the fact that many Americans strongly oppose a local or state government telling them that they MUST preserve a building. Possible suggestion: instead of having the green console table, how about a modern long, rectangular storage ottoman; it could provide additional seating; the inside can provide additional storage, and you could still put your games, etc. on top. They come in so many fabrics and colors that it would still be a modern statement while also fitting in. JoAnn's Creature Comforts House Tour |

This is a well-executed home tour. We saw the important rooms with wide-angles views so that we could see the entirety of each area's decor; there were some well-selected vignette shots (but not too many), and finally even a floor plan. JoAnn, I feel that your use of space, color, and textures are impeccably balanced: your home is elegant, yet approachable and comfortable; your personality shines through and gives us just enough to be inspired to do more with our own homes. Thanks! JoAnn's Creature Comforts House Tour |

Love it, love it, LOVE it. I come to apartment therapy for posts like this, exposing me to new ideas and possibilities for design and living. It is inspiring that there are people out there who show living can be full, creative, and rich in a small space. I am delighted that is is a reality, and not another series of 'concept' illustrations. Before & After: From Grungy Garage to Handsome Home in Bordeaux |

I don't think it will work in America. People aren't really interested in it, and there will be a million and one excuses why it can't be done. Pity ... Canadian Company Hopes to Grow on Top of America's Office Parks Design News 07.09.12 |

This is my favorite teeny-tiny entry. It's very elegant, clean, and modern, yet it reflects the owner's unique personality. Great use of color and texture. Paul's Sleek Studio |

I am a firm believer in the "less is more" approach to living, and Paul's place is another example which shows it is possible to live comfortably and in style in a small studio space. I'm a connoisseur of studio living, and I appreciate the level of planning and attention to detail required to create a cohesive and elegant studio. This is a great inspiration space! I think the owner made a great decision in buying this condo-- the modern industrial style has such great potential! And having such an expansive terrace in the city is an awesome privilege. If Mike is interested in making this place as purported "hot" as himself, the potential is certainly there in this property. Mike's Masculine Mischief in Toronto House Tour |

Yes, heavy and dark: heavy, massive dark woods, massive iron bars on windows, gray metalwork and gray kitchen, and the lack of color, excluding some actual pieces related to his work. Maurizio Pellegrin's Art Studio in Venice, Italy |

"JosieDaisy" -- yes, very true! I am afraid most of us aren't blessed with "high ceilings, big windows, hardwood floors, and a fireplace" so we would have to use color to add drama to our bland little boxes. Neutral or Bright: Same Room, Different Colors, Both Work |

I really enjoy reading and seeing posts like this one. It shows that creativity and design enthusiasm are still alive ... it's not one the scores of posts that all look like they aspire to imitate Ikea or DWR catalogue showrooms. Derek's Gidget Goes Disco House Tour |
