I found some wonderful faux shagreen embossed paper in beautiful colors at Sam Flax in SF. It looks and feels like the real thing but really cheap for a big sheet. Real shagreen cracks and is so much for a little piece. Shagreen: The Skin of Rays Sharks Retrospect | Apartment Therapy New York |

The leather is actually a baseball gloved colored tan and is discolored with age. It's pretty nice as is but I'm think hair on cow hide will be very mid century modern. Thoughts on a Plycraft Chair Makeover? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Chicago |

My challenge is I'm going to be doing this on a REAL tight budget, I mean less than $100!!! I'm sure I can do it without cutting corners. Thoughts on a Plycraft Chair Makeover? Good Questions | Apartment Therapy Chicago |

A lot of this isn't that bad. Come on... I'm sure the Eames/Hermann Miller chairs that's in every home posted on this blog was once considered tacky or will be tacky again sometime soon (some of it already is ugly and unpractical). Because it wasn't bought at DWR doesn't mean it's godly awful. Ugly Furniture | Apartment Therapy New York |

I found and bought a desk very similar to this at Ikea on New Years day. It was on sale for $50 regular $110. It's called the LINNARP and the one I got was finished solid pine. Wasn't exactly what I wanted so I sanded off clear finish and stained and changed the handles. Came out really nice and you wouldn't know it was from Ikea. It's very sturdy and well made and like I said it was solid pine. The only problem for you is I think Ikea only sells the black brown version now, the pine one I got was a New Years special and isn't sold anymore but not sure. It looks almost identical to what you are looking for and if you have time to sand and stain and screw on some slim linear knobs I'm sure you can pull it off. Sourcing a Similar Rustic Wood Desk?
