I agree. The cabinets here you can totally keep. Martha Stewart has some cute new cupboard hardware at Home Depot that you can use for an update. And I think new floors, new backsplash, new countertop. And obviously those curtains have to go. I would also remove the table pushed up to the window on the right if you don't really need it.

I love this look. One thing to take into account, though, is that it will make a small room look smaller. Better in a bigger space... except that rugs are expensive and then you need more rugs.

The other thing I've done before when trying to find a really great upholstery fabric, is I went to Anthropologie and bought something there with a fabric that I liked- it was either a doormat, or a tough pillow cover- something like that, and I reused it as the seat of a bistro chair. If you don't have to cover that much of a chair, their patterns are really special and fun. Plus washable. :)

Very beautiful. The exterior is especially impressive. And I like a soft color palette.

Hmm.... it's a retro piece with a retro fabric, which doesn't exactly give it a modern look. I'm sure you could make it work in the right space, but if you wanted to give it a more up to date look, I think you should recover it. It looks a little too denim-y to me. Also, I don't like to think of someone else sitting on those fabrics every day before it arrived in your home. Seems a little yucky.

Where can I get that flooring? Anyone? I'm looking for inexpensive but classic flooring solutions for a kitchen.

It's quite cute! I'm confused bc you say it's purple and it doesn't look purple in the picture. It looks like wood with white. I agree with adding metal legs if you think you can pull that off, but that does sound challenging. And then matching with metal pulls also will help. But I'm feeling like the desk is the cutest thing in the room at the moment, and you can get away with a quirky desk if you upgrade some other elements in the room.

I would say that the problem is that there's no white trim anywhere else in the room. It feels disconnected. Ideally, it would be nice if you could paint the wooden cabinets to the right white- that way it looks like a uniform built-in bookshelf. (Maybe ask your landlord?) And then I would replace the glass shelves to the right with painted white ones. Then just display pretty things- making sure the two bookshelves are connected with their contents and aesthetic.

A mixture of old and new can be a good thing! I agree that maybe some quirky old accessories on the bookshelf is a good idea. And then maybe you can lighten-up other aspects of the room with a light and graphic throw blanket, and a light or colorful bedspread.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone!
First, to answer a few questions- the chandelier was a find. It was an in-store fixture at a clothing boutique in Brooklyn that was going out of business. The owner's brother had made two of them, and my best friend insisted I purchase it immediately.
Second, the room looks better in the photos than it does in real life bc I am a professional photographer...
Third, the yellow chair looks like crap in person and I bought it off the street two weeks ago for $10.
BUT, I'm glad so many of you like the rug in the room! I'm still considering a more graphic and more modern rug, but to remove the rug and go with a simple window treatment would certainly be more cost-effective.
Any changes and I'll certainly send new photos along to share!
Thanks so much!

I'm just curious about when it's lit up- does the light come through so harshly that it feels like you're looking at a bare bulb?
I mean, it's adorable when it's not turned-on, but I would be concerned about how useful it is at actually diffusing the light from the bulb.

Moon River Chattel in Brooklyn makes beautiful tables from old wood. They're generally somewhat pricey, but every once in a while they have major sales. Just have to check in regularly! I got a beautiful 8 foot farm table 50% off.
