Hello there, Rhubarb! 10 of Our Favorite Baking Recipes

I have been using it for years as my holiday spice. Just did an apple chutney with it, and my pumpkin tea cake every year is a hit. It's awesome in pumpkin pie too.

Just returned from Bhutan and discovered a dried spice which grows wild there and what they call Local Pepper. It's also known as Prickly Ash.

I came home with three bags of it!

@veronicaina - the acid level in this recipe is not high enough to seal in a waterbath safely. you'll want to put this right in the fridge.

@greybeard - you could cap them right away, but they would keep cooking a bit so the texture could be softer than you want. important though - whether capped or cooled and capped, this recipe is not shelf stable. keep them in the fridge.

@alyssabean - as long as it is stainless or enameled cast iron you are good. you don't want to cook anything acidic in aluminum or iron.

hands down my favorite is homemade yogurt. i make a half gallon a week with full fat raw milk. the best storebought choices imo are milk thistle and hawthorne valley farm, both full fat.

i admire him for taking the food issues of america (the world, really) head on. using his voice to tell the many ears that are now listening to bittman, what needs to be done in this country is admirable. and i wish him strength in the road ahead.

My vote is Deborah Madison's Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. It is such a great cookbook overall - and really helped me to cook GOOD vegetarian meals 10 years ago after 5 of trying other cookbooks. Bittman's is How to Cook Everything Vegetarian is also a great book and perhaps a 14 year old might find it more fun or engaging. Can't go wrong with either, I think.

we have been drinking raw milk for the past 1 1/2 years, from a neighboring farmer in the berkshires. it makes the best yogurt, taste delicious in general, and is healthier than pasteurized. and i know the names of the cows and can come see them anytime.

cut side down on a plate left on the counter. many times i will use half one morning and then eat the other half the next morning. i can't taste the difference. soooo much better than in the fridge - that would be a waste of a half of tomato imo.

i have a ton of mason jars, and save other jars from store bought things.

i saw these and thought they were great and wasted the $25 on them. they were a big disappointment because they do not fit anything - just one very small mouthed jar from a store-bought jelly. they are too small for american home canning jars or as far as i can tell much of anything we use here...:(

...dal, my go to dinner when i can't be bothered is a quick dal and either brown or basmati, and yogurt...and homemade pickles, which i always have an assortment of and always come in handy for dinners such as these.
