I'm wondering, what time do others wake-up for their day? Most mornings I get up at 5am, do yoga/stretching for 30 minutes, then start making breakfast and coffee, getting everything ready for the kids before 6am (when they are allowed to come down for breakfast, and yes, they are awake before this, but I've become selfish with the quiet alone time). We leave the house at 7:30am. Most mornings this works, but sometimes...just sometimes, I wish it was later especially on the weekends and later weeknights, when I just want to feel like a grown-up and to be able to stay up past 9:30pm.

Thanks for this, we've been in our place for two years now, and are slowly working towards getting it 'just so', but the process is long and sometimes frustrating. We want to do so much, but are restrained by finances and available time. It is good to think about things as a process, eventually working towards a finished place.

R&R I'm curious too - why ban sidewalk chalk? Next they'll be banning swinging in the park because of the squeaking - that and children laughing too loudly.
Going to look into this, seems like a fantastic idea, especially for folks who are unable to afford private day camps.

I'm gen X. I garden. I am a gardener, and am considered a master gardener. What I want is more time to garden, a little more space to experiment, and to be able to focus on specifics (been branching a bit more into botany). I'd love a mentor, as I've still got so much to learn. Accessibility in general is a problem - knowing where to go to find information, but being able to afford to buy the information...it is a problem. Going to read those articles immediately.

This is funny. It must be because we have two Ikeas within 30 minutes of our place, me and my husband haven't ever had a meltdown (while there). The only thing that ever gets to me is sitting watching he and kids have hotdogs, while I (the vegetarian) look onwards, both disgusted and entranced by the love of cheap food.
OH, that and putting the furniture together...together. We joke about the time that we bought a half put together bunk bed off of craigslist, and spent hours trying to complete it...not realizing that the previous owners had messed it up and drilled holes where there shouldn't have been! That's when we started calling Ikea, the divorce maker. ;)

Chiming-in too, really wanted to see a comparison to before and after, and am not getting it from the photos (although lovely photos)...want to see the 'actual' house, not just close-ups of pretties. Need to see more photos please.

Growing up, our house and bedrooms were constantly being rearranged, and my parents still move the furniture around yearly. Now that I'm in my own home, I definitely rearrange - and have totally done the same thing as iamthelab. Yup, yup. Thought it was the norm :)

The house we own had to be moved 5' to accommodate lane access, as the house was built (1895) before the city was developed. Although it wasn't moved a great distance, it was great watching it being hoisted up and moved. We took photos of the whole process, still trying to organize them all.

Save on Packing: Move the House!

Our kids are three years apart, and have shared a room from around ten months of age. They are now six and three, and they wouldn't have it any other way. I know that at some point, down the line, they'll want to have their own rooms (which isn't going to happen anytime soon - our house has two rooms and we're not about to move). But for now, they love sharing. They both go to bed at the same time (7pm), but are allowed to read in bed, and they awake around the same time (6:30am) - although the youngest is more of a natural night owl, he will still be awake and his sister will be fast asleep. Our daughter can often be heard reading books to her little brother in the morning. There is something so sweet and beautiful in their closeness, and it is our hope that with sharing a room they'll grow-up to be closer to each other, more tolerant of others, and aware of space in general.

Whoops, forgot to mention one of the most friendly of restaurants....the Spaghetti Factory in Gastown. Might not be the greatest culinary experience (Italian), but the kids love it, and I remember loving it as a child too.

Live in and love Vancouver. Second the Little Nest vote, it is a terrific little restaurant (Mary the owner is the sweetest), the Naam is great for breakfast (vegetarian 24 hour, but can be difficult to navigate when busy), Main Street has some great restaurants that are kids friendly - Rhizome, Foundation, The Whip, The Reef, India All Sweets, Bert's...the White Spot is very kid friendly...If all else fails, grabbing a Japadog or something from one of the Wholefoods or Urban Fares and hanging out at the beach and enjoying an easy lunch or dinner.
Also second that downtown is a little kid-unfriendly (density and catering to a different cliental, more than activity-wise). But the rest of Vancouver is one big playground. Downtown library is awesome for young kids though, and Granville Island never disappoints. Our kids love the gardens - Stanley Park, Queen Elizabeth, VanDusen and UBC Botanical. There are a lot of free water parks in the summer too.
For weekly activities, Vancouver is Awesome has a children's section, we look to them for ideas and we live in the city!
Daloislane - the Kids' Market is at Granville Island (they have a free water park too).
