"More often than not, you'll find something beyond basic white walls in a Boston apartment."

Ha, not really - more often than not, you'll find white walls, sketchy landlords, misleading photos on Craigslist ads, four flights of stairs and no elevator, a back deck/balcony that's falling off the house, and a fun assortment of other 'character-building' features.

Not sure how I feel - I actually was surprised at how much I liked it up close in the photos on Tricia's blog, but I'm not sold on the look from a distance. The techniques are really great though and I'm sure will spark some ideas.

@Eliz - Niagara Falls, NY is definitely depressing (the Canadian side is and will always be a huge tourist draw w/ all the local haunts - Ripley's, wax museum, haunted houses, etc.) - there's a massive history of corruption in local government, plus there's still the history of the Love Canal disaster - a highly recommended but sad read: http://www.businessweek.com/print/magazine/content/10_50/b4207078529793.htm

And Wallenda will indeed be tight-rope walking (with a harness).

This is making me homesick - everyone thinks the Maid of the Mist is cliche & on their first visit? I've been 50+ times at this point from going whenever someone visited from out of town. While it's not always my favourite, it's still amazing to be that close to so much water. I also recommend checking out the photos of when they 'turned the falls off' in the 50s/60s - it's really weird especially having just been.

Also, I hope you went to Niagara-on-the-Lake - if you're going to the Canadian side of the falls, you have to venture a bit further and visit the vineyards and wineries for wine tours and make your way to the charming little town on Lake Ontario. It's gorgeous - in the summer there are always weddings going on, horse-drawn carriages and it's really just a gorgeous little treat.

I second that question - I put off installing my AC for as long as possible because it's so heavy and awkward, especially in a tiny window like mine. Fortunately, even if I did drop it out the window, the likelihood of hitting someone is probably next to nil, due to location. Still, I don't relish having to buy a new one if that happens.

There are actually a few mirrors in development that give you vital signs (see 2011 Innovation Awards) - not just the weather. So when you're brushing your teeth - you can check heart rate and blood pressure measure heart health over time. Those, I can easily see the utility of - not so much when it comes to weather.

I have about a foot and a half of space above my cabinets in my 300 sq foot apartment and it's perfect for more than half of my book collection - wall to wall books up there. The only downside is that out of sight out of mind, so I don't refer to/read them as often as if they were more accessible.

@Britt Phoenix, I really don't think that's the point most people are making - popular websites such as AT become popular by being consistent and setting and meeting the expectations of their viewers. When people come to this website, they expect a number of topics relating to design, home improvement, etc. This post has absolutely nothing to do with any of those things - it's not the topic, it's the context. It has nothing to do with the mission statement or set goals outlined by AT - if this were a personal blog or a more relevant venue for this sort of content, nobody would blink. It's just that when you set out to have a website providing resources for home improvement and design - this is bizarrely out of context.

I love these products from IKEA and while I am sad that they discontinued them - they were quite possibly the most tedious thing I have ever put together from IKEA. Still, I wish they'd bring them back - I have one FIRA left that I've repainted so many times to fit various colour palettes that the drawers are starting to stick and I don't relish the thought of sanding them down to start over again.

I recently moved into a new apartment and it is my first solo apartment, meaning I pay all the bills and I was NOT willing to spend the exorbitant amount of money for cable and my TV was an old CRT and just taking up space which I can't spare in a 300 sq ft studio, so I took the plunge and ditched my TV.

Instead of paying over $154/month ($120 for cable, internet, phone + $14 for Netflix + $20+/month for Center Ice to watch NHL games), I'm paying $74/month and that includes online Game Center Live for NHL games and Netflix.

For football games, I watch only Sunday games (not a problem when you're a Buffalo Bills fan because they're likely to never win and never get another Monday Night Football game again) at a sports bar in my city that's a designated 'Buffalo Bills' backer bar, so it's a win-win - I meet fellow Buffalonians and I get my football fix without dropping the money PLUS free wings!

I guess it's just lucky that I think baseball is really boring and don't particularly care about basketball either, but seriously - ditching my TV was the best decision I ever made.

Lucky for me - my fridge shorted out (coil something coil) and my landlord had to buy me a brand new one.

DONE and DONE. Squeaky clean.

Wait wait wait, ebarrett, since when is it anyone's responsibility but YOUR OWN to police how much you drink? I'm assuming this was a serve your own drinks sort of affair and not something with a bartender who does have a responsibility not to serve an intoxicated person.

Really though, both are the same issue. The host needs to act like an adult and stand up when it is clear that an individual is making a number of people uncomfortable. The drunk party guest needs to behave like an adult and not get completely smashed.

I don't think most people are against a television in the bedroom - most people I know HAVE a television in the bedroom, but when you're talking interior design, more people will claim to be against it from an 'academic sense' but practically? I really know very few people who don't have a television in their room.

I recently got rid of my TV while still having my computer/office in my bedroom - I solve the problem of still wanting a TV by putting my 23" monitor on a lazy susan. It serves as my monitor and then I spin it around to watch Netflix or Hulu from my lounge chair or bed.

Cell Phone Blockers: If You Could, Would You?
8/25/10 9:03 PM

Absolutely not.

What if there was an emergency in the nearby area and someone needed to dial 911? You can't always "spot" an emergency either, as this was the main argument in a similar post a few months back on another site.

"If I saw some emergency, I would stop blocking the cell phones."

An emergency could be something like a person spotting an ex-boyfriend or girlfriend against whom they have a restraining order. It's not immediately apparent that it's an emergency, yet it absolutely requires a 911 call.

One thing I haven't seen is this piece of advice:

- Before the flight begins, stand up and address everyone immediately around you. Explain that you have a young child and that this is her first time flying. You will try and do everything possible to make sure she is not disruptive and that you just want to make sure that they're comfortable as well. Then you offer to pay for their headphones AND hand out earplugs as well.

It works every time, no matter how noisy a kid is - people feel mollified and are more likely to be compassionate when they "Get something out of it"

I'll be honest - I'm not impressed with any of these - there are elements I appreciate from each, but this isn't a source of inspiration for me as someone who truly has a room that serves near triple duty.

I live with roommates in a Boston apartment, so my room is my only space to really design. This means - my room serves as craft room, office, living room, dressing room, library, and bedroom in some form or another. I have had to combine a fully-functional computer workspace with space for crafting/sewing, storage for yarn, jewelry, papercrafts, sewing supplies, and more, storage for clothing and random personal belongings, books, etc.

These are just rooms with a desk, tv, and bookshelves. I fail to see the 'double-use'. It's really just a room with an extra piece of furniture. The last bedroom, specifically, what is that? There's nothing saucy about it.

Let me just say that the 'high beds' in this post are nothing compared to the awful stupid bed I bought from IKEA.

It was on sale and it was called "MORRUM", which I joked to friends, should be called the Moron bed because anyone that buys it - is a moron.

With a boxspring - I still need a stepstool to climb into it. I'm nearly 5'10! Removing the box spring, it's still difficult to get into normally. The bed is nearly 4 feet high.

I got it because I needed the storage space underneath, but now I just want to get rid of it.

When I moved in to my current apartment, I was really excited - great location, close to public transportation, close to my job, but not too close, two bathrooms in our four bedroom, great roommates.

I'd only visited the apartment during the day. I didn't realise that next door was the MBTA (subway)'s dumping ground for all their trains overnight. They move them from midnight til around 3AM, I get about 2 hours of peace and quiet until the train starts back up again at 5AM.

The whole apartment shakes and the SQUEALING. Anybody from Boston will know what I'm talking about.
