wow, no one living in LA has posted yet? it's expensive here, but because there are so many neighborhoods it's not too hard to find something safe and (relatively) affordable. we rent a 1BR guest house in the hills of highland park for $1300, but we have a huge backyard, parking, our own washer/dryer (all hard to find in LA rentals). it's become a stretch with my graphic designer boyfriend only freelancing right now. of course you have to have a car here, too. we can't really afford to eat out much, but the city has a lot of affordable activities if you look and plan a little. it's do-able on a day to day basis, but forget being able to save much or really thinking of home ownership at all. i was pet sitting for a guy in a beautiful hollywood condo. he would leave the window open, so his big fat lazy cat could get some fresh air. i walked in one afternoon and saw some feathers, and thought they must be from a cat toy. but by the bathroom door was a huge city-fed pigeon, dead on the floor and a very pleased fat orange cat meowing from his bed. big open space, art on the walls, expensive everything, but nothing was disturbed! the lazy cat had to have taken him down in an instant! there was barely any blood, and a little poop, but i think the pigeon met his end rather swiftly. amy sedaris' 'i like you' book has great ideas too. one that stuck out for me was gathering the take out menus from several local restaurants and putting them in a folder. cheap, easy, you can decorate the folder, and they might actually use it, esp in the early days of unpacking and cleaning the new place. i'm a pet sitter for a locally owned company, and i go into people's homes all the time without ever meeting them first, even staying the night. Leaving Someone Alone In Your House For the First Time | Apartment Therapy Los Angeles |

we love our little duplex, big yard, huge bedroom, big patio, lovely view, our own W/D in the garage, among all the other wonderful appliances. the landlord and his family live upstairs and own the house, and at first he seemed like the nicest guy in the world. we have since discovered that he is lazy about repairs, has horrible taste (he tried to remodel his kitchen and it's hideous, 3 diff colors and styles of kitchen cabinets!!) and he and his family are downright intrusive, coming downstairs all the time unannounced. he recently asked us if we would take out a home loan in our name for him, since he was rejected for the re-fi loan. he didn't think that was inappropriate at all. i could live there forever if it wasn't for him....
