Anything that requires a utensil to eat it is a no-no at my parties. One less thing for guests to have to juggle.

My current favorites are: chicken sate skewers (with peanut sauce already spread on them), mini crab cakes or crab puffs, mini quiches, crudite cups with the tzatziki at the bottom of the cup, stuffed mushrooms, and (for dessert) petit fours.

La Femme Nikita has some great decor in Nikita's apartment--an Eames La Chaise, a Bose BeoSound 9000 stereo, an Ariette by Scarpa light fixture.

For that matter, the new La Femme Nikita remake on the CW has some impressive decor in the character Alex's loft. Lots of West Elm, Crate & Barrel, etc.

Tuck's place from This Means War had an idea I'm stealing in my next apartment: a grid of photos covering an entire wall, with large frames and very wide mattes.

Also a fan of Greg House's townhome and Jason Bourne's apartment.

Check out Nigella Lawson's recipe for Pomegranate Raita. Fantastic.

And btw, she pronounces it "rye-eeh-tuh", and since that's the only time I've heard it spoken, that's how I say it too :)

It's an honor to be in a thread with such decent, simple country folk. The REAL Americans. Don't let these elitist city slickers get to you, what with their silly whining about not being able to get fresh arugula and whatnot.

Kidding aside, I grew up in a small town and was fortunate enough to be a picky child--so I didn't know what I was missing. But now, when I go back, my mom always wants me to make some recipe I've mentioned recently and invariably something I need will be unavailable; be it shallots, leeks, whatever.

Is that a first world problem? Absolutely. Which is why I'm not pretending it's as dire as not having access to clean drinking water. Or are we only supposed to talk about the problems of the poorest of the poor here?

My ex had a lot of toys he collected (Happy Meal, Disney figures, you name it). And it always bothered me, because even into his twenties, his room looked so adolescent.

But I think if he had a place like this, it wouldn't have bothered me nearly as much! It's so grown up...without sacrificing the whimsy.

If IKEA comes out with these, I'll buy them.

@edmarch Well said. Some of us don't have the luxury of buying all high-end, unique items. And thrift stores and flea markets aren't my style--I like new. Clean lines. So where else do we do but CB2, IKEA, Target, etc?

In the end it's not about trying to have a place filled with items that nobody else owns, or constantly filling it with things less than "3 years" old, it's about building a space that speaks to you. If you can walk into your home and feel it's "you", then mission accomplished.

Besides, I'd find it exhausting constantly searching for things that nobody else has.

There isn't a single wide shot of the living room--they're all tight. I'd love to see the whole room, or as much as possible to see the big picture.

But what I see, I like. Clean and modern without being too cold!

@LadyJ - Celine's apartment in "Before Sunset". Yes, absolutely! Boho chic.

I'm also a fan of Alex's uber-modern loft in the new series "Nikita" (picture seen here: http://wwwanderlust.tumblr.com/post/3244744718 )

Come to think of it, the 90's La Femme Nikita series had an amazing apartment set, too.

But those are both tv shows, and technically the topic is movies, so I'll digress :)

Loora - I agree, the balsamic has always been sweet enough to me on it's own. Maybe it's because I'm using the good stuff I got for Christmas?

Count me among those who never buys dressing. (I hope I don't sound like one of those people who prattles on about how they don't own a tv!) But whenever I've tried store-bought dressings they've always tasted metallic or some other gross flavor.

crazymegtay - "Get a gun" is terrible, terrible advice in my opinion. There are already enough people out there that don't know how to handle a firearm, and they usually end up hurting themselves, their family members, or innocent bystanders.

"Get an extensive education on how to properly handle, clean, and store a gun" would be advice I could certainly agree with.

I realize I'm in the minority, but I love the 'before' picture. There's something about a mattress and books on the floor that I find inviting. Maybe I'm just trying to re-live my college days.

That said, the 'after' deserves kudos. It looks very clean, very open, and very Swedish--in a good way. It's a bit too sterile for my tastes, but only a bit. Nothing a window treatment, a framed print and a throw pillow or two couldn't fix.

Living in Florida, I have a healthy fear of hurricanes--although that's hardly the only thing that could result in a power outage. For years I've gambled that nothing would happen, which works fine until the moment your lights go off.

So, realizing that I'm not promised immunity from disaster, I've started assembling an emergency pantry with the basics. It's small, because I'm new to this, but I've got enough food and water to last roughly 10 days, plus LED battery-powered lanterns and plenty of batteries, a camping stove and a few small propane tanks.

I cannot tell you how much peace of mind this simple act has brought me, and I highly recommend everyone do the same.
