Since it's by the beach and has tons of woods, my inspiration would be "Bali/spa". Why not using outdoor white curtains like these: http://www.potterybarn.com/products/p6825/index.cfm?pkey=cweather-outdoor-drapes-shades ?
You could wrap the room in them, move them around to show some wood when you want to. I'd use mostly white fabrics & accessories to keep the room fresh and crisp and to make it look bigger. Light neutrals (light greys & greens) would work too. It would also bring a simple relaxed elegance. You could use outdoorsy furniture to play with an inside/outside theme. I'd add green plants to add to the theme: ferns, etc.
Here's some inspiration on the "Bali" idea: http://www.flickr.com/photos/villa-mathis-umalas-bali-indonesia/page5/

Hmm, I much preferred the before. It had more charm and definitely more class. The off-white captured the light and made the space looks bigger and less cluttered. Maybe if the plastic shower curtain wasn't black, the b&w would look a bit better? A little too gaudy for my taste.

Aïe!!! Marseille, not Merseille please. That really hurts the eye. Great loft though.

I think I might just have found the solution to my problem with the bookshelves in #5.

Any idea where to find the desk on the last picture? I like how it is very simple yet curvy.

Kelly and Stuart, what a wonderful place! I want to move in, would you adopt me?
I do like the minimalist look and it is great to see some elements I had dreamed up in my little head: i.e. the banket with storage behind the table (I'd like a breakfast corner like that), the row of suspended cabinets/vanity in the bedroom (I'd like something like that as an office space). All that storage is just perfect! It's an intelligent space with nice volumes, great light and room to breathe. Love the Lichtenstein in the bedroom.
The only thing missing for me is flowers. I can see a very sculptural arrangement, very simple, just right there. And a little round bouquet over here.

I guess I will have to change name soon: Maxwell, it's Eliane (French), not Elaine (American). Aaargh... ;)

No tv for me! I threw it out 4 years ago - best decision I ever took. I do go to the movies and read more. Just a laptop and a projector is all that I need. Btw, did you see that super-mini projector? I hope Santa is reading this comments thread! ;)

As for cooking, I enjoy cooking so this gives me maybe a few more excuses to cook. But I think the best part of it, is that I have homemade lunches in the freezer. And that beats any uninspired and overpriced lunch options that I can find around the office! :)

Eve, I love your place - particularly those curvy lamps and all the little touches of humour spread in your cosy yet classy interior. You have a great eye to find interesting pieces. I want to move in!

Eliane, the name is Eliane (French) not Elaine (American)! Merci. :)
Oh and I donated 3 boxes of tea to a friend. I had them in double. I would call that an "A" for a real sizing down effort! It was hard. ;)

@ mschatelaine: for a good sample of the Kusmi-tea collection, head to Zabar's in the Upper West Side. Buy a little tea spoon upstairs (the kind you fill in with loose tea, perfect for 1 cup) and have choose your tea downstairs.
And I agree totally with you on the original Elle Décoration (i.e. French): much better. Plus, easier to read for me. :)
I also like Marie-Claire Maison but it tends to be a little be more on the "country" side. Which is fine. But not in my place.

Aww, my little kitchen is there and very proud to be. I think the big work is only starting for me. I like cooking, so it was an easy week for me - that's the best corner of the apartment.

Thanks for posting the link to the Flickr conversation! I've only started lurking at everyone else's pictures this week and I got a lot of great feedback and inspiration (a recipe to steal from chottomotto as well as a floorplan tool, advise on how to hide wires from jendavid1000, and more.) I am starting to have fun with this! ;)

NB: Hi Janel, there's a little typo in my name. It's Eliane (French), not Elaine (American). I know, I get that all the time. It's a bit exotic. ;)

Oh wow! I love this idea!!! I live in a rental apartment where you have those ugly globes with two light bulbs in the center of the room. I've been looking for a solution to hide it. I think this could just do the trick. I'll put it on my to-do list. And when I start this, I intend to beat Ah-Yi's time! ;)

"Zenifying" my apartment is number one on my list: purging, organizing, blablabla. I've started last spring but need to get rid of my "outbox" and get things moving.

Next, my bedroom and office corner/library: from A to Z!
- need new bed
- bookshelves
- closet to reorganize
- address window treatment

Time permitting, lots of little things around the house:
- bathroom: grout shelves maybe paint
- kitchen corner: big cleanup & cabinet diet
- entrance closet: reorganize
- living room: artwork on walls bicycle solution
get rid of the sofa would love a breakfast
corner, diner style (probably next time)

Good to know bepsf. It does look a little cheap.
Btw, the correct link to the sofa I was mentioning earlier is: http://www.doorstorefurniture.com/images/b_lounge_display.jpg

This is exactly what I am looking for. Sofa bed usually opens the other way and I am looking for one that opens exactly like this one. I too would be curious to read the feeback of someone who tried it.
I also like this one from Door Store, better design and a red a little easier on the eye. It is also modulable which is fun. Has anyone tried this one?
