I want that lamp and the end table. They're fantastic pieces.

Also, the colour change is really lovely.

It's really cold in Edmonton, so saw dust just sits on top of the packed down, slippery snow. I've seen ash (from a wood stove) used with some success if the area gets sunlight as it helps roughen up the packed snow by melting it a bit, but most people who want to avoid salt or chemicals us straight sand as it adds traction and is sharp enough to get ground into the packed snow.

I found some great bagged tea that I can't (yet) find a loose tea alternative for. Because I like weak tea and prefer the fresher taste of new (not previsouly steeped) tea, I just cut that tea bags open, put the loose tea in an air tight container, and use only a little bit in my tea strainer when I make tea.

@Andysnat: It's a bit presumptious of you to assume that only some nationalities know how to make tea and that only Americans frequent this blog (I'm a proud Canadian decended from a long line of English folk - the "inventors of tea time" - who make crappy tea).

I bought a drying rack that fits in my tub so that I can do this even though I'm an apartment dweller (without a balcony). I don't mind the stiffness for somethings.

Love, love, love. I just ordered a bunch. They're going to look fab in my new place and they suit my marine biologist/librarian geekology perfectly.

All I have is my trusty little refurbished "obsolete" cell phone. I rarely use the phone to talk to people, so for me a landline would have been almost 3-4 times more expensive then the cheapest cell phone deal I could find (a $10/mo automatic top-off pay-as-you go).

My absolute favourite is orange-pineapple. My second favourite is grape-nut (it's an East Canada thing).

Right now, while I dwell in a dark and small basement bachelor, I'm all about the cool grey-whites. I know that sounds nuts - you'd think it would make the apartment seem darker and colder (an issue when you live in AB) - but it made a huge difference. The grey shadows in the dark corners aren't as noticable because they blend in with the grey in the paint.

My father was a pack rat (read: hoarder). My mother was too busy with 4 kids (2 special needs) to manage keeping the place anything more then safe and semi tidy. Until I was in my late teens I was a packrat who dusted, straightened and kept things fairly organized. Then we moved. Then I changed rooms a few times (moving into progressingly smaller rooms). Then I went to university and changed living spaces every year. Then I moved a few more times. You get the picture.

I do think that my fathers hoarding repulsed me in the long run because I saw how difficult it was to pack/move and fit everything into a small space (his space for his stuff reduced significantly when we first moved). But, I think that the things that influenced me the most were all the times we moved and living in a chaotic household (I was the only child who didn't have special needs or suffer with depression). Keeping things neat and organized was a way for me to control my world just a wee little bit and made life easier when I had to move.

I love staycations. Sometimes you don't need exotic locations or action packed days to unwind.

I also cat sit. It doesn't sound very exciting, but I'm currently cat sitting for friends who have two hilarious cats, a beautiful large house, a large backyard (herbs, flowers, etc. included), an amazing kitchen, cable (with "videos on demand"), and quiet neighbors. This is like staying in a 5 star mansion compared to my tiny dungeon (basement apartment) in a noisy building. I'm still working each day, but it feels like a mini vacation every evening.

Frozen peas. There the perfect snack when you want something cold but not sweet.

I prefer mine after they've sat out on the counter and defrosted a bit.

I'm suffering with old built-in storage that was made of low grade wood that has developed an orangy-tone and that I'm not allowed to paint. Heck, even if I could paint it, it would either cost a fortune or require a hella lot of elbow grease (it's covered in multiple thick coats of super glossy oil-based finish). I hid half of it with wall-to-wall curtains, but the other half is out in the open.

My last roommate bought some of the Norwex microfiber cloths. I don't know if they were a special type from the Norwex line of clothes or just their "regular" ones, but I hated them. I don't think that they were worth the amount of money she spent. I didn't find that they worked significantly better then any other microfiber cloths I had used. And, when they got dirty, they had to be boiled (they could not be washed with detergent - I think it had something the silver in them). After using and boiling them once, I never used them again.

Honestly, I much prefer the cheap microfiber clothes my aunt gave me - they were from an inexpensive giant pack of a dozen car washing clothes, they work great, and I can throw them in with the regular laundry.

I have not used any other Norwex product, but I didn't see anything in the catalog my roommate brought home that I couldn't easy replace with a cheaper and still eco-friendly option.

You could use one for an interesting pickle strainer. It would be much classier then the classis Tupperware pickle strainer/keeper.

I wish I could. I live in an un-insulated building in the middle of Alberta (where it gets extremely cold in the winter) so I have to be careful of the pipes such. But, I do try to keep my apartment fairly cool and prefer to wake up to a chilly apartment.
