ALL the above suggestions sound good but let me add one more; how about mirror tiles, the ones on the smallish size, say 4x4 inches. ( don't worry they come in foot square sheets ). The one thing I noticed about the room is that it looked dark but maybe it was the time of day but if not the mirror will allieviate that and mirror is MCM. PLEASE tell what you decide as we are all of us nosey.

Merrick Mayer's Minneapolis Minnesota midcentury modern's magnificent! (even if you did break the alliteration by naming the cat Arthur, I was so looking forward to adding, " and moggy Malcom ").

I remember telling a friend of mine that allowing children ( she never saw them outside of playing in a park ) to her party was a bad idea. I was instantly labled a "child hater" but I still got to go to her party and watch her reaction when she saw little 'darlin' beat the crap out of her Steinway grand with a fireplace poker.( Darlin's' mom took to her heels and went home and never spoke to my friend again, not even an apology.) Even though I refrained from telling her ."I told you so!", that was the beginning of the end of our friendship, her friendship with lil' darlin's' parents, and also it was the last party she ever held. BTW insurance replaced the Steinway but it was a BIG hassel.

@ Anne-Helene Do not apologize for your English! You are better at it than many native-born writers. I didn't mean to over react but I have seen many so-called artists figuratively puke paint on canvas and call it art then defiantly look around and dare anyone to disagree, a variation of the "Emperor's New Clothes" for this oh so PC/everybody gets first place day and age, that it has become a very sore subject with me. Anybody who has spent time honing any skill should be able to relate. As for the thrift store re-do's call it craft or call it decoration but art...eh, I think not.

@ steal33flowers ahhhhhh 1. Not all litter comes from a cat box. 2. Why would you infer Detroit? 3. It's called sarcasm. You might want to seek help for your reading comprehension there BTW.

Cool! Now the inside of my house can look as crappy and run down as the more dicey parts of the city. I think scattering some litter on the floor would complete the look along with a crack pipe set artistically on the coffee table.

This may sound a bit strange but one of the best uses for Al foil is for burns! Run cold water over the burn then WRAP it in foil, shiney side towards the burn, It will feel good then hurt like hell then gradually feel better. It will keep you from getting a nasty scar; let me give you my own experience, I was trying to unstick a pan full of hot grease ( 450o) when my fingers slipped and I deep fried my thumb and index finger. After much howling cursing and ice I was seriously considering going to the ER when I remembered the foil trick. Being without insurance I wrapped my fingers in foil and sat down waiting to see what would develop. PAIN then oddly NO pain, I actually fell asleep. In the morning I unwrapped them to find.....nothing. All was well, not even a blister! I re-looked up foil/burns and lo, there were scores of similar stories. Wow. Look it up yourself then try it should you burn yourself, you will become a believer. Salut!

Do you have one of those "smart meters"? It would behoove you to google them then. The information you'll find out about the harm they do, including emitting a HUGE EMF field, will curl your hair and hopefully you'll make the electric co. replace it. Those meters are literally poison. Good luck!!!!!

Instead of cutting the books why not xrox them and cut the copies apart. Bonus; you get to make more that way.
( Thank heaven you don't have any sleeping children or old folks hanging about the house.)

@gregory I can't find an online link either but they are in the store ( Manchester NH ) and I've seen them for at least a year because I've been buying up the regular lightbulbs for my brother to use in his trouble lights at work. They are there and if you happen to live anywhere near me I'll gladly go there with you AND buy you coffee later and yack about interior design. Sorry that I can't be of any more help.

uummmm I'm sitting here looking at my 60W LED lightbulb that I got at ( everyone make a face ) Walmart for $6.87. It looks just like a regular lightbulb except instead of a filliment it has a sort of illuminated core and there's a grey band between the glass and the metal screw in part, giving the thing a pleasant 'steampunky' look. If I wanted a 100W it would have cost me an extra two bucks. Last week they were all marked down a buck or two depending on the wattage. This works out to about half of what they want at BestBuy. Just saying.

Two suggestions:
1. Why not play up it's street creds? Buy some heavy canvas ( or drop cloth, whichever's cheaper.) and a couple tubes of acrylic paint and have at the cloth graffitti style? ( Or old school tattoo. Depends if you're artistic.)

2. Go to any Goodwill type place and pick up one of those "exotic" wallhangings, you know the ones that are black background and are supposed to look like a tapestry. Use the most interesting parts and toss the rest, cheap and urban cool.

BONUS. While you are at the Goodwill check out the coats. Sometimes there are leather or fur ones there that can be had cheaply because the arms or hems are 'shot' but the rest would be dandy to use as upholstery. If nothing else have FUN with your chair, hey.
