It's funny because this setup would never make it past a home study if you are adopting a child like I am. In order to qualify you have to provide that child with a room that is minimum 8 by 10 feet and it must have a window, a smoke detector, and a carbon monoxide detector. I think simplicity and cohesion will be the way to go in this tiny space. I agree that a good cleaning and fresh paint job will do wonders. I think a nice soft grey for the walls like Stone Harbor from Benjamin Moore, with contrasting crisp white towels and textiles would improve the overall feel. I would add hits of colour only in artwork by framing some lovely screen prints or photographs in all-white frames to pull focus from those tiles. I would hang a pure cotton waffle weave shower curtain and I would buy a second shower curtain with which to make a tailored sink skirt.
