Kudos for not letting the current trends dictate what must be in your bedroom. In my opinion there isn't a one size fits all to design. Your home should make you happy, whatever style that is for you. If you've got a playful style, why not show it? I love the shades - a fun play on the his and her sides of the bed! To really save on framing - buy frames at garage sales/flea markets/etc. and a hand held mat cutter and pieces of mat board at an art store. Just finished painting my bathroom wall - checkerboard style with squares in multiple colors. Perfect lines with no bleeding. I've done several paint jobs requiring a clean paint line and have found the easiest and most effective to be the original idea suggested by kelleyk.
