Without knowing where they will reside, it's hard to say what to do, but what fabulous chairs!

What I would say is don't try to make them look really contemporary by using a ubiquitous organic modern looking printed fabric. (I'm not going to name names, but there's a site that shows plenty of "before and after" shots of such things and the before is often better than the after.)

These stand just as they are quite beautifully. I'd touch up the paint job if the chips bugged me. I'd only re-do the upholstery if I had enough money to use something that's extremely chic and expensive. And I'd hire someone who'd do it right.

I love her little laundry drying system from the window. If only I could do that myself. Not sure how it'd work on my tiny balcony...but I might just try it this summer.

RoseCampion--you might also try Argyle St. Or the super market on Broadway just south of Argyle. Most of the stores are Vietnamese owned. I feel like I have definitely seen those thermoses in that area.

I have a pink and green kitchen and I love it. This one is fabulous!

My apartment is much like my wardrobe--filled with vintage selections all carefully hand-picked and edited regularly. I seldom buy new clothes and I seldom buy new stuff for my house. Color wise? You bet! I love to wear the colors I use to decorate, but more importantly, the kitschy sensibility of the place is echoed in the novelty printed garments from the 40s & 50s that I happen to collect and wear. (Natch, I have my everyday running around clothes which are often fairly dull, but not as hard to replace as my vintage.)

My scented candle of choice is one votive--black rose sold in Chicago at a hippie type candle emporium called Wax Man. (It's rose/floral, but not old lady or barfy.) They're cheap and the scent always gets compliments without knocking people over with the scent.

I hate food scented candles.

I used to have so many pillows in my living room. I collected vintage souvenir pillows for a long time. I put them all away and now feel better about having people over. They have a place to sit and don't have to negotiate the pillow situation.

I grew up in a house with a lot of bed pillows. I still have too many of those. I haven't made the move to decrease the number of bed pillows because my dog loves to be up high when he's on his side of the bed. I could definitely do with at least one fewer. I have 6. I guess I can just be glad I don't have 10.

The good news is that the basement is available. It sounds as if you don't have to lock them--another bonus.

I live in a building with at least 35 bikes (3 of them are mine) in the basement. The landlord asked me to research a rack that folks can use to lock their bikes because our basement is overtaken with bikes. This post has helped get me started on it. I'm thinking of having marked "parking spots" based on who rides most. (There are many bikes down there that haven't seen the light of day in years.) Thanks for the links and ideas!

I can't help but wonder why this site seems to engender a lot of posts from readers who think that telling someone what they should do or should need is an acceptable way to behave. Passing a value judgment on this person's lifestyle isn't particularly helpful, now is it?

OP--you're awesome! Keep on racing! It sounds like you and your mate have a great time together doing something you love. I'm jealous.

I bought a frame from this place. I have not put it together, but it was very inexpensive and plain which is what I wanted.

They also have kits that you can buy if you wanted matting materials, glass, backing, etc. It is very affordable.

Yes! Chenille bedspreads are lovely. A vintage one could be found on eBay anytime. I remember one that my grandmother had that shed. That was bad, but it seemed like it was just that one. The rest of her bedspreads must have been tufted differently or better made.

I have come to look again, by the way, and have to agree with the previous commentors who have fallen in love with your place. You house seems so perfectly lived-in which is the kind of thing I'd like to see more of in these house tours.

You had me hooked when you described your place as "eclectic mid-century farmhouse." It's the perfect way to describe it. Your place looks like a Joseph Cornell box come to life.

This is a place that looks like it inspires creative behavior and stimulating conversation. Wow. What a treat! Thanks for sharing.

I am surprised by interior design writers who suggest that it's a nice to have a hotel feel in a home.

It makes me wonder if the people who wish to have this "feel" in their home ever travel. Even a boutique hotel home isn't the sort of thing I want to come home to at the end of the day.

I agree that you can certainly do a lot with colorful accessories, beige and white. Would that I could, I'd live in an all white majorly windowed box with perfectly appointed (colorful things) around me. I have dogs and they like to make things complicated. (I've washed my flokati rug 4 times in the last 3 months.)

I think it's great to see how people work within the confines of their limitations as renters. Having said that, in my mind color should be the underpinning for the entrant's desire to even enter in the first place.

When you look at the winners last year, you see a fair amount of accessorizing with color, but I think the best entries this year (and last) were clearly using color -- integrating it into the space. Jesse's a renter and I love how committed he is to being enveloped in color. I'm not just talking about kooky kitschy colors like my own. I mean that I feel best about the entries that actually somehow "own" it. (*It* being color.)

I couldn't help but wonder if we stripped a few colorful accessories from a few of the places this year, what would we end up with in the house that shows off color? I honestly don't think that the contest (whether you're renting or you own) should come down to voting for people who make easy commitments to vases with beautiful flowers. But, if you noticed that it's easy to achieve a colorful, lively vibe that way, then I think the exercise succeeds entirely.

I might be wrong, but I thought there were a lot of entries that relied on detail shots that were banal, but surely colorful. My dishware and my pillows extant--in my mind, these things don't really add-up to designing with color.

I think there are some tremendous entries in the contest and I do think there are certainly worthy contenders. As an entrant, I'm just happy I wasn't too shy to do it! Participating in the contest was fun and it took a lot for me to clean my house, learn how to photograph it, and try to present its best side.

I'm delighted that people I don't even know had some very kind and supportive things to say about my apartment. My friends, of course, we ready to chime in, too, but honestly, it's the site readers I don't know who left comment that made me smile inside.

Having written that (and hoping not to sound like sour grapes because my place didn't make it to the voting stages)--this voting system pretty much bites.

I believe (but don't know) that I somehow managed to vote for one entry two times in the same round. I also think that since judges are choosing 16 finalists, we need to see how those decisions are made. Maybe you needed to present a run down of what the editors saw and reasons they chose one entry over another.

Clearly, I'm not the only person who wonders how landlord white walls and green pillows became the criteria for a finalist. I almost wondered if the editors/judges looked around to see if there was something from CB2 in the place before considering it.

I have to agree--last year, the voting was really fun! I felt like I was rooting for specific entries, and moreover, there was a way to assess those that had merit, but maybe didn't stretch far enough to become a contender for a color contest. If I recall correctly, there were three or four "levels" that the voter could choose to describe his or her thoughts on the place. The contest felt more alive and interactive that way.

What annoyed and troubled me most this year is how vastly different my idea of a colorful apartment is from the editors here and the voters, too, I suppose. And it's hard not to conclude that the voting is somehow about choosing the better of two that aren't that good in the first place. It seemed more about pitting favorites together or pitting less than stellar work against each other to arrive at what might be the *least* indicative of what reader's actually think. I have a sense from just the few comments I've read that this is an overriding sentiment of this year's contest. I could be wrong.

Thanks for letting me "sound-off" here. I hope I don't sound like I'm ranting or crabby because I'm actually feeling really great about my entry and some of the ones that have advanced. This has been on my mind for over a week now so I thought you should know.
