Congrats on the baby! Warning: People will have this bizarre need to give you cutesy animal towels and washcloths that fold oddly and take up a lot of space. I feel your pain, we have an equally small bathroom. We have high ceilings and considered putting cabinets up...decided it would look weird in the bathroom so we were actually going to put it above the door in the attached small hallway so it looked built in. It would have been odd but useful and removeable in the event of resale. I ended up just pairing down, (goodbye animal towels), we had a washer/dryer stack which needed replacement and opted for a combined washer/dryer (one box) unit and used the "new" space for shelving. If you have floor space elsewhere, you can also use storage furniture. We built a platform bed in the nursery with three sliding containers underneath, storage boxes under the crib, storage ottoman etc. Good luck!

I totally appreciate this post. We don't have a grill and loathe to use the oven when it's so hot. If you have a slowcooker, you can make pretty good pulled pork bbq sandwhiches, ribs and tacos. Add some charred vegetables, cold salads and you have a faux grill feast.

thats a great room, for now. Once the baby can pull up the crib won't be safe and forget about keeping anything neat on those bottom 2-3 shelves. Nice for a non-mobile baby though.

Ditto the thumbs down to expensive play mats, particularly the skip hop. I was a total moron and bought TWO of them to get the colours we wanted. The rest of her room was totally DIY so it was our big splurge. What a waste. Dirty very fast and even the littliest baby can undo them easily. Not worth the $ or constant effort of putting them back together again.

I don't know many things but I do know my cake pops. I was excited to see that Starbucks is now carrying cake pops in three flavours: rocky road, tiramisu, and birthday cake. I tried rocky road, it tasted cheap and cheaply processed. I could just taste the corn syrup and the little marshmallows are best described as spongy wrongness. Alas, I love cake pops so am determined to try all three. Hopefully one of them won't totally suck.

Love it, great colour scheme in Caps. Though I would never put it up on my wall as it really bothers me that the poor man never got anything to eat. I'd probably feel hungry and guilty every time I saw it.

I'd make cinnamon caramel crackers, using this recipe as a base: http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/04/chocolate-caramel-crackers/

PS: tonight we had a special treat - baked plantains tossed with cinnamon and a little butter topped with homemade chantilly cream and a little tj's chocolate sauce drizzle. fun, easy, sweet but not over the top. definitely little kid friendly.

How about dinner? I'm not great in the kitchen but we all have to eat so I just use whatever easy recipe we have. Fish cakes, pot pies, lasagna and other casseroles are good bets. She gets to mix, pour, shape, whatever, anything except handle raw meat. She's 3.5 now but has been interested in cooking for ages. I let her pick out recipes - she only gets to choose the ones with sugar every now and then.

What a wonderful question. Great ideas all around. If you anticipate having children from various ethnicities/backgrounds you might want to add multicultural touches to the room. You can do this pretty cheaply with posters, dolls, and books. :)

I used a ring and transferred it from hand to hand, which worked pretty well once I actually remembered to switch, but I'd probably throw one of those bracelets into a shower basket.

I love muhammara - had it a party on top of good soft goat cheese. Heaven!

Thanks! Yes, regular plywood works fine but you have to be sure to sand it really well to guard against splinters. You can probably use particle board or MDF as well.

If you don't have the time or inclination to DIY, you can also try raw furniture stores. I understand some of them have or can special order storage/radiator combos.

I have a love hate relationship with the skip hop floor mats. We actually bought two sets to get the colours.

They were great floor mats when the baby was immobile, then she started active play and realised they were one big puzzle. She liked "wearing" the square part of the mats with the holes as a skirt. She's moved onto other things, but she still takes them apart -also starting to like putting them back together. I also started hiding different patterns of scrap book paper or her flat mirror under random circles for her to find. Its a real treasure hunt.

So we like them but I wouldn't recommend them for people who like to keep everything "just so" all the time. The other downsides are:
1. they're pretty delicate, they show teeth marks - and yeah she'll chew on the little pieces that hold them together. I definitely don't think it would be suitable for people who have clawing pets.
2. for some silly reason, they're not really reversible, ie the finishes are *slightly* different from one each side. I'm sure most people -not on AT- wouldn't notice but I certainly do and it bugs me.
