I would never think to paint my walls pink as I'm not super crazy about it, but I love the way this looks! The color palette is unique and awesome!

Cute! Love the Rabbit Hole idea, the decor does remind me of Alice in Wonderland in a way, and I love the purple color on the walls.

On it being "girly" as others have mentioned-- obviously this is the best time to decorate HOWEVER YOU WANT because you don't have to share :) So make it as girly as fuck!

Oh, might I add, basil is easy to grow. Really easy.

And the idea of your "survival" game in the Midwest made me sick. I'd like to see you really try to survive in a food desert, like poor urban areas that are much closer to you. I'll take away most of your salary and your transportation, and you can try and find some fresh basil within walking distance.

Small Town Survival: When the Grocery Store Sucks

Spot on, pearmelon, spot on.

One thing we learned, growing up in a small town in the Midwest, that you MAKE DO with what you have.

My hometown of 8,000 was far better off than many of my family and friends' hometowns as far as groceries go.

Thing is, when you live in a small town, you can request that your grocer order certain items. Chances are, they'll try to fulfill your requests, because small town stores are more likely to do that.

Small town stores might charge more for items, but you know what? The rest of your living costs are lower because homes are less expensive and rent is cheaper.

Jump-start a farmer's market. This was done in my town. City-goers, however, would be appalled to know that it's only open May-Oct Saturday mornings (because most people that sell items have weekday jobs), and we're lucky to have such a great one.
But what do you do when you want local produce in the winter? You can or freeze your own vegetables like your grandma did. Our society needs to get rid of this "let's ship it in from across the country" attitude. WE HAVE SEASONS AND OUR FOOD SHOULD REFLECT THAT.

My mom always refilled our soap dispensers back home... we never bought new ones. She bought the giant bottle of off-brand refill. She wasn't doing it for the environment, she was doing it because it was thrifty. This is something I learned to do, and I was shocked that other people just threw the old ones out and bought a brand new one for more money. Now, if they were to give her the option to buy a much smaller bottle that you add water to and made it just as affordable (or more affordable- as it would, in theory, cost the company less to produce), she would use that.

Now see, I always had trouble with Cilantro, everyone else seems to have it. Maybe I'm in the wrong climate.
Basil is a no-fail for me.

Sparky's isn't left to just plain chocolate and vanilla after the cicada flavor is gone. They do a lot of fun flavors, they're always being innovative.

Large bathrooms are such a stupid waste of square footage. Numbers 2 and 4 look like a good size to me. As long as you can get out of the tub and dry off, it's big enough.

You can take nearly anything to a potluck. It doesn't have to be limited to salads and casseroles.
My mom used to do all sorts of different things such as:
+ fajitas- cook meat/veggies ahead then put in a crock pot for keeping warm, have the tortillas to the side with other condiments
+ fresh corn- why make it complicated? Usually the potlucks we went to were heavy casseroles, and having just a simple vegetable was always popular and easy
+fresh bread with butter (you can fancy it up any way you like, herbed bread or flavored butter)
+ rice
+ hummus with pita and fresh toppings
+ corn chowder, potato soup, tomato soup, etc.
+ sliced cheese

This is exactly what I did in college. I didn't have a nightstand. I had a chair.

Not as bad as my grandma. She buys us new things that she finds on clearance at Walmart or Dollar General hat no one wants. Every year at Christmas she has "grab-bag" where she puts a laundry basket and a cardboard box full of unwrapped price-tags-still- on "bargains" that she collected all year under the tree. We draw numbers and take turns picking out what we want. It's like White Elephant only Gma bought everything. Items range anywhere from expired can of peanuts to vhs tapes to "Charmin to Go." There's usually at least one set of kitchen towels or oven mitts. Those always go first because at least they're useful. When you pick something out, she always says, "CAN YOU BELIEVE I ONLY GOT THAT FOR A DOLLAR?"
Not to poke too much fun at Gma though! We all secretly love it because of the stories we get to tell. If she got us normal gifts it wouldn't be near as fun and it'd set her back more money than she needs to spend.

I agree with moondust... cats need freedom! I don't understand locking up a cat inside all the time... never to be outside in their life? How sad!
I had a friend growing up that had indoor/outdoor cats... they were potty trained like dogs so they didn't have to use a litter box. The cat would meow by the door and we'd let it out so it could wander and just be a cat!

So ditto to what everyone else said about not being environmentally friendly, but also... how is this different than a 'human' disposable bowl?
Dog: I will not use this, it is made for humans.
Owner: Oh I am sorry, let me get you one specifically made for dogs!
Geez this is dumb. On so many levels.

I agree with natalieparisi. Kids these days are just trying to get ahead of each other, GPA and scholarships takes priority over what they want or should take. Plus, at my high school, the home ec teacher was a major b-word who liked to give out a lot of B's and C's because she wanted her class to not be an 'easy A.' She did lots of long boring notes and gave ridiculous tests instead of doing more hands-on learning, which is what home ec should have been. There were kids that whined because their only B in high school was from 'Adventures in Foods' freshman year.

Despite being a terrible teacher, a lot of kids took her class because there was a 'practical art' credit required at our school. Home ec or a computer class, basically. There were a good number of boys who took home ec also, and they weren't judged for it. They just wanted to cook and eat at school.

Now back in middle school I took home ec, and I thought it was fantastic. The teacher taught us ways to make or do things to save us money, how to sew simple things, and how to cook simple things. We also had a unit on eating healthy and vitamins and such. I think it worked better in junior high since kids had more freedom to take the 'non-academic' classes at that age.

I agree with Sugarbakers, the brick in the pictures is all very interesting looking brick. There are types of brick that are pretty ugly.

As a current dorm-liver I must say those students have luxurious living situations in comparison. Imagine all of your furniture is peeling and 60 years old (same age as the building), you can't move it out and you have no room to add your own. Imagine cinder block walls with mold growing in hidden places if you don't pay attention. No closets--just built in cabinet things to store your stuff. Brownishgreyish linoleum tiles with a few green ones mixed in because some broke and had to be replaced. Throw in a roommate with bad decorating sense. This is what happens to the academic scholarship kids.

As a college student, I'd like to mention that the majority of college students do not have that much space to themselves to work with or the option to bring their own furniture/remove existing furniture! Luckies.
