I'm a bit late on commenting, but wanted to chime in on the microwave discussion.

I have a metal lunch box and often bring items to re-heat. Think leftovers like spaghetti, chicken, or casserole. I keep a proper dinner plate and soup bowl (a few thrift shop scores for less than $1, with an awesome pattern!) and a metal fork and knife in my desk. If I need use the microwave, I just use the plate or bowl.

If you have a plastic bag or a system that works for you, great! Why mess with a good thing?

If you're searching for something new or looking for a method of bringing your lunch, I highly recommend one of these ideas.

I would mix up raw vegan Hummus! Toss in some chickpeas (soaked overnight in plenty of water), fresh squeezed lemon juice, a cup of raw tahini, chopped garlic, salt, and cayenne pepper. Blend, blend, blend! Yum...I recently adopted an 80/20 diet (80% raw vegan, 20% cooked foods) after fighting cancer several times over the past 15 years. Not only does this new way of eating benefit my health and give me more energy than ever, I also am learning about fabulous new ways to cook. I don't own a blender right now, so this blender would be a welcome and blessed addition to my hectic life :)

I LOVE this loft! Well, the space itself, that is. Where is this in Chicago, if you don't mind me asking?

I am looking for a loft, but everything seems to be either overpriced or in a less-than-wonderful area. Anyone have any recommendations?

I adore my IKEA couch. I have the Ektorp loveseat with a floral pattern (the cheapest color right that isn't white!). I think it costs something like $400 (including the slipcover) and is super comfy! I managed to get mine for $225 (plus delivery), as the couch was in the "as/is" department because it had been used as a floor model. I got it home, washed the slipcover in the washing machine, and, then I had a clean couch for my 1st "grown-up" apartment. Craigslist is awesome, but I have to say, its lovely to have one piece of furniture to call my very own. Good luck on your search!

OF COURSE this is hot! Protecting your skin with SPF and the shade are the hottest things ever, esp. during the summer months. I don't know about you but I don't want to share my fabulous apartment with anyone who's been sunbathing with baby oil...Just my two cents :) L

Quick question regarding cleaning...

Anyone know how to clean a painted radiator? Mine is gross. Seriously gross. Dusty, cobwebs, etc. I moved in while they were on, so I couldn't really touch them, so now, they are yucky and dirty.

Any suggestions on what works well or any method they use??

Thanks!
L

Nathan, your apartment is beautiful. It makes me want to watch a thunderstorm and drink tea while sitting on one of the couches. I know someone else asked you to marry them, so I won't propose again, but if you are ever looking for a nice Irish girl...LOL! Good luck in the contest :)

While I love seeing everyone's decorating styles, I am even more in awe of their space! Where is everyone finding these cute little Chicago apartments??? I would love a place like this in the city...

Where did you find such a great space?! I'm living in the greater Chicago area, but looking for a loft in the city--to rent or buy--and haven't seen such an awesome place such as yours!!! Where is the building located? I'm guessing West Loop, but I'm probably wrong...

Where are you all finding these "giant" apartments in Chicago?! I live in a vintage studio that is a generous 450 square feet and the majority of my friends (mid-20s) live in comparable studios or one bedrooms. I have to disagree that the Midwest has smaller apartments, as I looked at at least 25 places prior to choosing my current apartment. The small spaces are out there...it's just that no one thinks they are cool--just small.

I know mine is is just small...perhaps I will be cool enough by 2008 :)
