Are you sure it's staining? In looking at marble samples sometimes the vein just oxidizes naturally and even if you grind it down, you're still going to find that color....I have the same problem with (definitely stained) terrazzo; can't stand it and my landlord doesn't want to strip it because who knows how far down it actually goes (old building). However, I dropped a bottle of vinegar on the floor the other day and it did bleach; I might take a crack at it; it's not like I can ruin it much more. Much Luck!

Rooms like this remind me of the movie Secretary where there's a pristinely made bed and Maggie gently places a dead roach on the pillows.....

There was big prob with tenants trashing apts here in Hollywood SoFlo not too long ago. The reasoning behind it is sick; they have to come up with at least 2 mos security/rent to move in. Then they don't pay any more and by the time they get evicted to the point where the sheriff is involved, they've run off and they've "parted out" any decent fixtures. It's sick and it's calculated and in this area you'll find that most of those tenants are on local welfare programs that kick in the move-in money; so free rent AND apartment all on the taxpayer dime. A lot of slumlords don't care because they've got the money and they'll just put in cheap replacement fixtures. So the area rents stay abnormally high, keeping good tenants out. (why pay $650 for a studio when nowadays you can pay that for an empty condo?). Luckily I've had a great landlord for the last 7yrs; as long as the rent is paid he lets us do what we want. He's practical with a young family so understands having to constantly find new tenants is costly so keep us happy.

Here in SoFlo one of the convenience stores was having trouble with ducks who would come thru the automatic doors, grab little bags of chips and then run like hell back out. The owner never did anything about it because it was a customer draw. (which shows you what kind of yahoos live in south florida that they have the time to hang around all day just in case ducks come in to steal chips....). At our apt complex we used to have possums open the outside water spigots for drink and to bathe; they couldn't be bothered to shut if off though. The raccoons down here are big and walk around like the sopranos....

remy - No one is going to cause problems around the office...the woman upstairs may have leverage over them or even be their boss to some extent. In a real world, the person who is being annoyed has a better chance of getting out of the lease than getting peace. So instead of winding up in court to waste money, the money could be better placed in the next place.

sinthetic -- I do take offense to what you say. Here her family gets to live probably twice as well as her and she gets a cage after giving them her money....how fair.

If her family was living well she wouldn't be far away from them and sending money back. Read a book on Chinese culture. She's obligated to take care of them; she's probably the lucky one to have gotten out.

The condescension is all over the place here. There's a lot of ignorance here about that culture. Our "first-world lives"? She's in BEIJING. That's not a backwoods place. And it's not "bare survival"; she's paying less than 10% of her salary on her place which is quite good (esp since our "first world" pricing is 30-50% of salary for housing. Their economy is VERY DIFFERENT from ours; what she makes is decent. I couldn't live like that either, but she's gotta be a strong puppy to be able to! We're spoiled to all hell here in the US. We get nervous in portopotties.

Do what you want, but be conscientious about it; you are paying THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS to live in the place. And I agree with the poster who suggested they would play games with your security deposit at the end anyway. Nail holes technically aren't even recoverable money-wise when you leave; they're usual wear and tear which isn't part of the security deposit, and even then they've got to provide reasonable receipts. Mass (esp the Boston area) housing departments are VERY STRICT about what can and can't be done by the landlord. And how would the landlord know what kind of curtain rods you're using? I'd put a nannycam in your apt; if they're freaking out about something this stupid, they sound like the type who think they have the right to let themselves into the apt anytime they want. If they get too much in your face, let the housing board know; they'll get slapped down.

You have to look at where you live too. The city I live in here in SoFlo only allows homeowners to pick 1 of 5 colors (you have to get a permit from the city to paint and must bring a chip before they'll allow it) because anything really outrageous will probably lead to some kind of ghetto....gawd. These are the same people who want to follow another city in fining guys who wear droopy drawers (if they don't pay the fine, they're going to jail). Gotta love America!! Free to be....your crazy self.

Hello there, new to the boards but have been enjoying AT for a while now -- great ideas. I want to say something to everybody who always states that they can't paint their apartment when the rent -- OF COURSE YOU CAN. You are paying THOUSANDS of dollars to live there (did I mention THOUSANDS). Just be prepared when you move to either 1) put it back to what it was or 2) (depending on local housing laws) having money taken out of your security deposit. And if that's going to happen, have your landlord sign a certified affidavit or give you timestamped pix that it was done; 9 times out of 10 LANDLORDS DO NOT REPAINT, esp if you used a neutral color/did a good job/been there a short time. Or when you sign the usually boilerplate lease PUT IN THAT YOUR GOING TO PAINT; esp if the paintjob is crap to begin with. I never understand people who don't or won't because they don't own...THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!
