About the cornstarch: isn't cornstarch "food"? Will it attract, um, you know VISITORS? I really think you guys need to update this item or do a new one to address the question! I really want to try this on my windows but... phobic about introducing food to the equation.

However, this post DID inspire me to wash my pillows, so all is not lost! My pillows are good quality, and I don't want to throw them out. I've never washed a pillow before but I think it is time. In fact, I would love to see a post here that shows us how to wash a pillow. Maybe discuss the different kinds of fillings.

Do I really need to buy a tennis ball? Can I roll up a bunch of old clean gym socks into a hard ball and use that instead?

Please consider this instead: "How to make your stuff feel new."

And I am glad I save my clothes. If you don't wear something for awhile, you may come to love it later. It happens to me a LOT.

Better towel strategy: Buy towels that are good quality in nice colors that will give pleasure for years to come. My current towels: purchased in 2000 or 2001, Garnet Hill house brand, 100% cotton, neither the cheapest nor ridiculously pricey. They look great. They fluff up nicely.

My towels from 1995? I use them for yoga class, road trips (in case the place I stay runs out of towels), beauty treatments, beach house, homemade rags and washcloths, to protect a mirror or a painting when I am rearranging the household.... Old towels have a million uses and if you travel with them, you don't worry about losing them.

Never mind! I think I can still use this potting soil. I caught a zillion fruit flies by laying 2 traps next to the soil. I will just keep refurbishing the traps when I think they need it.

I did not want to open a bottle of wine, so I used a tablespoon of cassis! Swish in a teaspoon of water. Add Dawn dish soap. I wonder if the alcohol helps to sedate them. Cassis is 20% alcohol. Nice.

I also did a mix of white vinegar, apple juice and dish soap in another bowl.

Both traps work, but the biggest fly landed in the cassis. I take it as an omen. Maybe the adults go for the more complex offerings.

No idea what's up with the paper funnel and the plastic with the holes in it. The soap is doing its evil magic.

I am having the potting soil problem in my tiny NY apartment. It's very weird. I think I created the problem by leaving out some cut lemons overnight. But I think the flies like the soil.

The brand I just got is New Era -made in Clinton NJ. I don't want to besmirch the potting soil I bought. However, maybe someone here knows of a potting soil that is high quality? I am new to this game... but hoping to grow some seedlings in my kitchen!

Did anyone yet mention that the cleanest looking curtain hooks are the silver ball bearing ones? They are the smoothest and least fussy.

Love the purple tiles, but that's what makes horse races.

I agree - paint the vanity white, not black.

I own a stack of gorgeous custom shower curtains in all kinds of patterns, but I recently decided to take a break from all the visuals. I washed my dirty white fabric curtain liner in bleach, bleached it some more, and now use it as the curtain. It is simple, clean, translucent, bright - and cost me nothing (save cost of bleach) to change the look of my bathroom. Everything feels airy and bright.

Also, you may want to consider buying and installing your own small vanity. I did this once in a rental, paid a plumber to do it for me. It was a tiny little sink for a tiny bathroom. I really enjoyed having my own brand new sink!

mskk, you mentioned a mini clothes washer by Haier that you favor. Which one is it? I'm thinking about investing in one.

I have and love #6 - the teeny weeny dish rack. I also have a dishwasher. When I need to clean it, I can put it in the DW. But there are times when I need the dish rack. Much of the time, after I've cleaned it, I hang it on the inside of a cupboard door. It comes with a tray which is not always needed. That also stores easily. However, I use the utensil dryer daily and that fits in a corner.

I tried this with the peel of a lemon and some Morton's salt after making juice. It's a good way to use the peel instead of just throw it away...

Any special reason for using a grapefruit? (What about a lemon?) And is it ok to use ordinary Morton's salt?

What are the pros and cons of powder versus liquid? Is powder for the dishwasher more economical than gel? I've also heard that it's more effective. I find this problem humbling! Just can't figure out which is more efficient!

Hi Shanalulu/Editors

Thanks for bringing this up. I have been trying to figure out whether powder or liquid dishwasher detergent is more economical - and really don't understand all the issues around powder and liquid. I would appreciate a thorough, factual discussion of the economics and ecology of powder vs liquid in every realm. Or, if such a thing has already occurred, please point me there!

Ha - thank you. Mediterranean is definitely what I strive for, but my bedroom can't help being a northeastern Yank. :)

Good question AnaJ - thank you for this explanation. There are brief spurts of time when I can read with the window exposed and no lights on. However, the windows are all UV resistant, so I assume the plant will not receive "real" sunlight. Maybe I underestimate the power of sunlight or don't understand plants as well as I should!

I am now seriously considering a plant light - though I am on a budget. Or an African violet! Thanks Lady J.

Wow, your responses are heartwarming! Including the artificial plant - believe me, I've considered it. I thought about getting tissue paper flowers, but was advised by a special person to bring something LIVE into the bedroom :)

The bamboo saga is impressive indeed.

Ok, I'll forget rosemary - what about lavender? And meanwhile, I'm going to print out your suggestions to aid my research. Hugs to all!

I have stuffed animals. Oh well! I also have one of those flokati rugs, same size, diff color. This pic reminds me to move the flokati rug farther out, maybe. Mine is right up against the bottom of the storage bed. Maybe it would look more grown-up if I pull it away. It sits on top of wall to wall carpet, but I like touching the flokati rug with my feet. The wall to wall is not as luxurious.

I like the aluminum dining nook (for want of a better term)

Would the seat get cold? Is there enough room for a cushion? Would that look awful?
