My grandfather, a retired security guard and self-taught folk artist (though he doesn't call himself a folk artist - he just "makes weird things out of what he has lying around the house"), has a small bathroom about the size of a train restroom filled with art in his downstairs. He's covered every inch of wall with art (vintage naked lady pictures from the turn of the 20th century, kodachrome postcards from Yosemite, Jesus painted on a glossy piece of bark, and a sh*ton more). It is magical. The rest of his house is covered in art both made and found, too, so the bathroom is just an extension of it. I love it. I think it's at the very core of our human existence to fill our spaces with what we love. Display Inspiration: Art In The Bathroom |

World Market had some really pretty ones this summer, and now they're on clearance on their website. We got a really pretty yellow and blue one that we used inside for a while and then moved outside (it was too big for our kitchen). I think we spent around 50.00 for it. Never had a problem with movers, but when we moved back to TN from AK the house we had lined up to rent turned out to be an infested, crumbling, inhabitable nightmare. Luckily we got out of the lease after just two nights of trying to make the place decent. The hair that broke the camels' back? coming into the kitchen at night to find at least 20 cockroaches skittering over the cabinets, fridge, and countertops that we'd just slaved away for those two days to get clean). Two Uhaul moves in two days, then another rental two weeks later when our new (clean) townhome was ready...it was seriously the worst move ever ever ever ever. Oh, and I have to mention the Hotel Seward in Alaska. Just beautiful kitsch! Taxidermy, dark wood, lovely rooms with crank out windows. It's perfection! Do You Intentionally Stay At Kitschy Motels? |

I think like anything it can go either way, you know? I've stayed in chains that were dives and kitschy ones that were dives, and of course the opposite is true as well. There are several fun little places near me (I live near the Great Smoky Mountains National Park), and several that we've been wanting to try! Once we stayed in this awesome lodge in Townsend (before it got bought out and made fancy) where we made good friends with the concierge/clerk and got to drink coffee with one of the town policemen.
