Thanks, Cheri! I think the key to keeping dark rooms light and airy is good lighting and bright accents. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much! My process typically starts with one item I love--in the case of my living room, the rug. In my bedroom and the guest room, there were wall colors I loved and built the rooms around. I have learned to use neutrals for the larger furniture items and add color through pillows, accessories, etc., which is more cost effective. I like to think about what color should be layered with whatever the primary color is in the room, then choose items in that color. As far as blending traditional and modern, I think the trick is paying attention to the pieces you acquire and how they fit with the whole--put differently, how they tip the scale on your eclectic mix.

Hope this helps! :)

Thanks, Duana! I appreciate your compliments!

Hey, Mock, how excited to see your transition to a more modern look! I think the lighting depends on what kind of room it is. My dark grey room is a master bedroom, and I have a small light on either side of the bed, as well as an overhead light fixture (pictured), as well as another lamp behind my reading chair. I think if your living room was this color, you would want more/brighter lighting than that. You may want to just see how things look after you paint, then add lighting as needed for your room. Good luck!

@alyssa.rae: Thanks! It's Plumage by Martha Stewart, though I believe I had it color-matched in Benjamin Moore paint.

@alyssa.rae: It's Plumage by Martha Stewart, though I believe I had it color-matched in Benjamin Moore paint. I got the idea from younghouselove, as they also painted their guest room that color: http://www.younghouselove.com/2011/02/holy-buckets/

Thanks, all!

@averymckenzie: The bubble lamp art is my own photo blown up on canvas. For a small price, you can have one, too!

@mssmith: The sideboard is actually made up of three Ikea cabinets, which are a dark brown wood with white lacquer doors. I can't seem to find them on the Ikea web site, but they are in the workspace section of the store.

I think it would look great painted a medium to light grey color, with the trim and picture rail remaining white. If you wanted to get really funky, you could paint the picture rail the same color as your beloved table, which would play off the other yellows in the room, too. I think the room would be improved by having an actual color, as opposed to the cream that is there now.

Hey, achupp, yes, I do enjoy a great view, which has really spoiled me now that I'm looking for a place to buy. I'm on the 19th floor and face due east. Good luck with that messy boyfriend! :)

Thanks, redih! The living room couch and chair are from Macy's--the Milan. They are actually not apartment-sized, but a regular sized couch and chair. I wish a little that it was a sectional, but this offers more flexibility. I have thought about ordering the matching ottoman so it feels a bit more like a sectional.

To clarify #6 above: I love the art in my bedroom, just not the arrangement of it. The bedroom is quite small compared to my old bedroom and I haven't mastered making it look decorated while not claustrophobia-inducing.

Wow, thank you all for the nice comments! I will do my best to answer your questions:
1. The living room and bedroom lamps are from Lamps Plus, the same style in two sizes.
2. The painting in my living room is by a Chicago-based artist, Marketa Sivek. You can see her work at MarketaSivek.com.
3. The nightstands and bed came from a now-defunct store in Dallas, Texas, called Urban Home. There is a tag inside that says they were made by South Cone Trading Company in Peru.
4. I cannot take credit for the kitchen cabinets and counter, though I do like them--it's a rental and came with them.
5. The rug is by Madeline Weinrib.
6. Yes, I am also dissatisfied with my bedroom walls--I have not gotten the art quite right.
7. The living room paint is Quietude by Sherwin-Williams.
8. The bedroom farm paintings are by FranceGallery on Etsy. I learned when I received them that the artist is in Illinois, very close to the small town where I grew up!
9. I am also not crazy about the displayed DVDs, but I have a lot of them, like watching them and couldn't find any more useful storage solution than this. I have considered color-coding them like the books to improve their appearance, but worried that might be too much.

I think I covered everything--thanks again! I am beaming.

@jasminesummer: I'm not sure, but it reminds me of my kitchen color, which is Quietude by Sherwin Williams.

I don't understand why his entire living area (including dining room and office) was featured in the proposal and before photos, but we don't see the dining or office areas in the after. What happened? Why not let us see the entire room "after"?

Thanks, Sunshiney, that is exactly what I was trying to do--to convey the feeling of the duvet with no picture. Nikki, I'm not sure why you would get personal about what I put in one post on one day, but I hope you have a better day tomorrow.

I have a variety of duvet covers and change them according to my mood, but I tend toward my rust-colored West Elm or cream and gold silk duvet in the winter, and lighter- or brighter-colored cotton duvets in the spring and summer, like a gray/cream Martha Stewart I've had for years, or a newer Garnet Hill with bright red and pink abstract flowers.
