Instead of putting your kitchen table at the end by the stove perhaps mount your tv and have you futon/sofa across from the tv. The only thing I would worry about though would be if you splattered anything on the tv when cooking, I guess it would depend on exactly how much wall space you have. Then I would float the kitchen table in front of the Kitchen sink. And then in front of the bathroom some sort of storage for clothes and such. Definitely get different area rugs to define your spaces. Perhaps even some low shelving/bookshelvs to put in between the different spaces.

I have a "Cooking and Recipes" favorites folders and within in that sub-folders like "chicken", "bread", "cookies" etc...As for recipes in magazines or newspapers I have an accordion file with the same categories as my sub-folders.

I'm sure many hobby/craft stores carry album frames. Mount them in an interesting pattern or perhaps taking the main colors from each album and mounting them from darker to lighter as you go up or down stairs so it creates a color gradient/scale...if that makes sense.

I like the idea of a mantle above the fireplace,wrap around shelving on the dining area side (display nifty kitchen stuff that adds to the decor) and the mudroom type station on the entry side.

I second the square/rectangle shade idea.

My favorite of the series by far! It still reflects the owners since you kept their artwork. Whereas I think the gray paint space turned out somewhat sterile since the owner's landscape art was discarded, didn't seem like anything of him remained.
