I've recently picked up a 4 port switch and run Cat-5 cable throughout my apartment. Now the only thing I use wi-fi for is my iphone, which I'd plug a cable into if I could. Many orders of magnitude faster and infinitely more secure.

Handbrake for Mac OS X does do 5.1 sound as long as you're starting with a Dolby Digital source. I converted dozens of mkv's with 5.1 for my Apple TV until I got sick of the process and bought a WDTV Live, which will natively play pretty much anything.

I pay $1250 a month in rent for a giant 1200 sq ft first-floor loft in a trendy and mostly-safe neighborhood in Philadelphia (Northern Liberties). No utilities are included and it's tough to heat and cool a giant room with 16 foot ceilings and 80-year-old windows.

I moved 2 blocks one time. It was totally worth it. The first place was dark, bug-infested, and a ground floor unit with windows that wouldn't lock. The second place was sooo much nicer. I lived there for 6 years.

I don't consider myself an apple apologist or a fanboy (I think the ipad is dumb, for instance) but my iphone 4 hasn't dropped any calls yet. I lose a bar or two if I contort my hand into the shape that shorts out the antenna, but in actual use my reception's fine.
I know it's the cool thing on the internet to trash anyone that speaks well of any apple products, but I love my new phone.

Well, first if you have a turntable don't put it on the same surface as your speakers like in the first picture. The whole thing will rattle in time with the music.

I live in a loft conversion in what used to be a paper box factory. There are a couple of little things that bug me but aren't chasing me away:
1st floor apartment. There are gorgeous views of Philadelphia from the 3rd and 4th floors. My view is the parking lot, and the view from the parking lot is of me.
Concrete floors. They shatter _anything_ that's dropped on them and cold in winter.
No washer and dryer. I'm just down the hall from the laundry room, but I miss having my own.
It's impossible to heat. I have 14 foot ceilings and my heating registers are about 13 feet up. Very little heat makes it down to where I am.

But I still love the place.

When I can loan and borrow books for it I will consider it. If I didn't know that the books will vanish into thin air when Kindles are no longer supported I would also consider it.
But they will. I have 100 year-old books, I'll be shocked if we still have Kindles in 5 years.
