We had the basic model for a while and recently upgraded to the Penguin which uses glass bottles. We don't really chill the water: just run your tap until it's really cold.

As far as convenience is concerned, I actually liked the cheaper model better: the Penguin's level is on the back and it comes with an awkward mechanism for inserting bottles. However, we're trying to keep plastic out of our lives all together so we appreciate the glass.

My mother in law is an absolute "as seen on TV" addict. So when she can't justify buying it for herself, she gets it for me "as a gift." I've gotten the Magic Bullet (that was actually the best one, we used it a bunch until the blade went dull); various Ronco appliances for cooking unhealthy meals, a whole passel of Sham Wows and even the Pancakes in a Can (or whatever it's called). Most of it goes directly in the trash and/or to Salvation Army. I really wish she would stop...

I LOVE this but I grew up in Europe. It works especially well when you have a washer/dryer combo under the counter.

You have to keep in mind: few European homes have dishwashers, so this is usually the space occupied by the clothes washer. And people rarely have separate dryers also. You either have a washer/dryer combo OR you dry outside.

And if you think you're sacrificing space in the kitchen, just think of what you could with your laundry room instead: an extra closet, a pantry or a whole extra room! Definitely worth losing a few cabinets in the kitchen.

I think this farms looks great and I'm very happy that you featured it to educate consumers.

However, as we all learned from the recent animal cruelty prosecutions in Ohio, not every farm is like this. Consumers really SHOULD visit their local farm and figure out if they are happy with the way their cows are kept. Because sometimes dairy production is more cruel than meat production.

Here, in NY, I recommend visiting and purchasing Ronnybrook products. IF your farm won't have you, you don't want their milk.

Have salad for dinner and instead of cooking, reorganize and clean all your cabinets.

a) you'll have newly clean and organized space
b) you'll discover all manner of ingredients you forgot you had and be inspired to make stuff with them.

I find that most my cooking slumps happen in the summer because it's too hot and disgusting to cook so it's a good time to explore non-cook recipes.

Pizza! No utensils required and box serves as table on the floor. We never go to a restaurant because who wants to sit next to sweaty, exhausted people wearing their "moving" clothes?!

I keep mine on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator in a sealed, plastic container wrapped in damp paper towels. So very similar to the water bath idea without the potential destructiveness of tipping it over and being forced to mop up the entire kitchen.

I NEVER use bleach and don't intend on starting. There's absolutely NOTHING in my kitchen that needs it.

When someone is sick, we do use Lysol spray in the bathroom, and the sick person is responsible for putting their own dishes in the dishwasher and we run it on "sanitize" cycle.

So far we've managed to stay healthy and clean without it for 7 years.

All of your comments are making me hungry.

I'm a "1 cookie, small cup of milk" gal. If those are lacking, some bread with butter will do. Basically, it has to be carby.

whoa whoa whoa! so much negative sentiment towards calorie counters!

I'm a foodie, but I also enjoy wearing size 6 pants. I count calories (using caloriecounter.com, actually). And yes, I include all beverages. Wine does have that many calories anyway so WW is selling ignorance.

I would recommend tracking your eating to anyone, wanting to lose weight or not. I am a vegetarian, and discovered to my horror that while I was getting plenty of iron and B vitamins (usual veggie deficiencies), I was developing quite a potassium deficiency. It's been corrected and now I don't get migraines anymore (potassium is responsible for nervous system health).

So.. umm.. yeah!

I make a vegan, miso and seaweed, Asian-inspired risotto. I make a miso and seaweed stock, and cook the rice with it. Then I stir in whatever Asian vegetables I have at the end.

I was initially skeptical about this but had a bunch of cherries that were just a little past their prime so I tried it. Mine have been marinating in a bottle of white balsamic I had taking up room in the cupboard and OMG. It's been 3 days and it's already delicious (I did pit and cup up my cherries). Can't wait to make some cherry-flavored vinaigrettes.

I use biokleen as well even though I buy all-organic produce. I especially like it for berries, which are difficult to wash well with water alone. Keep in mind that even organic produce is often sprayed with things you don't want to be ingesting. I learned about this in California last year, when the friendly berry farmer explained to me that his produce was not just organic but no-spray as well. When I asked my NY organic vendors at the Greenmarket in NYC, they grudgingly admitted that they occasionally sprayed their produce with pesticides allowed by the organic standards. Hence, I use biokleen.

I have that same issue. Once a month, I declare "cook whatever is in there" day and pull everything out. Everything that's spoiled, I throw away and stuff that's about to go bad gets cooked, usually into a soup or a muffin.

I love making skate: it's a really thin piece of fish so it cooks quickly and evenly. I like it best fried in some kind of coating that will make it crispy: my default is flour, egg, panko breadcrumbs and then pan frying.

You have to serve it while it's very hot though. That's when it's best: so have everything else ready and then quickly fry the skate. Also, it's total comfort food for me so I like to have it with something equally comforting like mashed potatoes, or pureed cauliflower.

Besides chicken and waffles already mentioned (and the fact that I'm a vegan so I don't eat anybody...)

I think it stems from the biblical prohibition on eating a mother and its young in the same dish. And since so many breakfast dishes have eggs in them, we don't eat chicken meat as well.

When I invite people to come eat at my home, I always ask them if they have any food preferences or allergies that should be accommodated. And then I plan a menu that accommodates them with as many dishes as possible: kosher, vegan or gluten-free.

When I'm going to a party, I definitely tell the host I'm a vegetarian. Whether or not I prepare them a dish depends on how well I know the person and whether I trust them not to sneak chicken stock into my pasta sauce without thinking about it. Usually, I only let former vegetarians cook for me. Otherwise, I'll bring something.

Oh, and I have a rule that you aren't allowed to bring meat products into my house, just like I wouldn't bring dairy into a vegan's or pork to a kosher home.

I grew up in a house with a wall oven, and haven't had one since, to my great unhappiness. Mostly because I've burned myself several times on pots that are sitting on the stove top but heat up from the back vent of the oven.
