We are still looking for the "lesson" in this one....my mom was making bread crumbs for a casserole topping using a mini-food processor and (skipping to the end) somehow landed in the hospital, on oxygen, for three days with stitches in her foot, two cracked ribs and a punctured lung. Not to mention a severely bruised ego! Maybe the lesson is to not buy "mini" appliances? Or more truthfully, if you find yourself cut, get help right away or at least SIT down instead of hopping to the bathroom down the hall leaking blood and then stumbling, falling...and hoping that somewhere along the way there will be a cute paramedic to redeem your carelessness. Now that she is ABLE to laugh, thankfully she is laughing at the unfortunate series of events.

we are living overseas right now and keep a list of our favorite names: Smart, Clever, Beauty, Fortunate, Trouble, Obvious....Bicycle, Shoestring, FewDays....it's a long list and we are still collecting names. Another random favorite is Expandito.

we have such a tower (a gorgeous hand-made by a woodworker-friend) and had a love/hate relationship with it because we were at the time a family of 4 plus a big dog in an 1100 square feet cottage. the person who gave it has a grand old house and no children. we really didn't have room for it and I resented that it took up so much space despite that it did provide a safe, inside work/play area. I believe there is a version with hinges that allows the unit to fold/collapse somehow. I also noticed there is a new 'chalkboard/art easel' add-on that we would have loved. We put felt 'floor saver' buttons on the bottom and just dragged it around. I am going to drag it out right now, in fact! It is a good home base for living room forts as well as great in the kitchen.

Living in an african country where import duty is insane (92% in some instances, then add VAT, then add.....), airport duty free is for us an amazing bargain -- for things we need to have here (unlocked cell phones, 220volt electronic equip, etc) we're so excited when we can shop at the airport. Even at smaller airports, we are likely getting better quality products, the sales staff are usually more knowledgeable, the selection is better. We save heaps of money buying liquor and silly things like NUTS or magazines, too! Who would have ever guessed.

Very sweet...easy to forget that hippos are considered the most dangerous ("wantonly malicious"!) animals in Africa...and to overlook their charming habit of spraying feces and urine.

We have a similar problem and are going to try some wall-mounted electric panel heaters in the bedrooms. These are common in South Africa but so far we can only find one company in the US that makes them and the reviews for this company are mixed. (we will try them but keep our old heaters in case we need to re-install them). There are also a few companies who make 'baseboard heater covers' that are for safety and looks but the prices seem really steep for what you are getting and you still have the problem of not having that stretch of wall. In the meantime we have shortened all our floor-length curtains and have a little buffer block that keeps the couch away from the heater in the winter months. not pretty, but safe...
