i think this ban is pretty common in the rocky mountains. when i lived in steamboat they had one. i think it was due to particulates- and when you make your money off of beautiful views (and powder) on the top of mountains, smoggy air is a big no-no.

the new kitchen seems fine, as does the old one- its amazing what proper lighting of a shot can do!
i hope the owners like it, and i appreciate that maybe it is greener than a typical kitchen gut-remodel, but there is no need to title this green unless you are going to explain what is so green about it, otherwise you are just going to get criticized.

Similarly, saying this kitchen is non-faddish and approachable for "normal" folks is hard to swallow unless you explain how- the pictures arent adequately explaining it.

I volunteered on the campaign and am terribly excited that he is our president. I also understand there is danger in idolizing a person, especially a politician. I understand that these plates are a bit of pop culture and cheekily nostalgic, but I had hoped that the enthusiasm people had for obama the candidate would transition into enthusiasm for working to make the promise of change a reality (all of us getting involved in government and community) and not idolizing a person and buying plates.

i tend to hold on to FLOR catalogs. The furniture sitting on top of those rugs is exquisite.

in a situation where your family is going through a major adjustment and having a grandparent in the house will help the kids while the parents are busy (very very busy) then sure. especially if its a big house.
i have a good friend whose mom is staying with them (actually next door in a house they own) while the friend starts back to work after maternity leave. she loves it. the baby isnt in daycare, and grandma gets bonding time.

but you are right- your house, your rules, and not just for the heck of it.

like everyone else i still have a lot on my to-do list, but i've made a lot of progress. in this cure i: ripped up carpet, rearranged my living room, painted wood paneling, hung curtains, cleaned out closets, hung artwork etc etc. all of this cost me maybe $100 bucks!
cant wait until i have a bit more cash to make some furniture purchases- i'll be cure-ing for a few more weeks to get ready for holiday guests. one of these days my place will be a stunner!

my little brother used to be a prolific tagger, that is until his friends landed in jail (and not overnight), and he barely avoided it.
they werent trying to prevent gentrification, they were trying to put their tag wherever they could, especially over other tags of people they didnt like. i'm sure some taggers are doing this with more of a purpose/ideal, however i do think it is a quality of life issue- when someone tags the front of your house, over your business sign, etc. that isnt cool, it makes you feel not in control of your property, and you dont have to be a gentrifier to feel that way. is some graffitti beautiful? without question. is tagging? no, and sometimes its gang related and its a person's right to not want it on their stuff.

if the carpet is light, work with it and paint the walls a dark color.
carpet also makes me think about hotel rooms, which makes me think about sumptuous linens and curtains. go glamourous with it.
or if the carpet is fug, put a rug over it.

i'm dealing with this right now, and i know there has got to be a way to make it work!

something personal to them: a framed old map of the place they met/went on honeymoon. gift certificate to the restaurant where they went on their first date. something creative with their wedding invitation?
i bought one couple the cookbook for their favorite restaurant while they were dating (they dont live in that city anymore). i know a friend that gives couples a year of picnics- once a month they can order from her- she makes a great meal, packs it up and sends them to the park. something that makes them have a romantic day once a month seems sweet.

the point is, something with thought and sentiment.

my parents had this problem when my mom went back to work full time, and it was a major stressor on their marriage. finally, after nagging, pleading, and yelling for years she sat him down and said "you can either do half the chores or you can use some of your spending money to hire a housekeeper". he's been paying the housekeeper for 15 years! turns out he was happy to pay to make her happy and it hadn't ever occurred to him that hiring someone was an option. and its not as expensive as you'd think- plus he'd gladly pay $50 twice a month to stop her yelling!
i'm facing the same situation now with my boyfriend- decluttering definitely helps but i haven't found the perfect solution. this probably isnt good, but i've realized he actually is kind of possessive about his stuff, even though i cant tell cause he leaves it everywhere. when its in my way i dump it on the floor in his space. somehow he doesn't leave it out anymore!

oh jeez, this post is exactly what i need. glad to see i'm not alone! i moved in to my bf's in march- it was so full i couldn't bring any of my furniture (yet). so, i've started with surfaces- they don't take up any more space but make a huge impact. i convince him to let me try something, i do all the work and pay for it... and then he likes it. eventually i hope this will lead to less resistance to change, and partnership on the projects. so far, removed wallpaper and carpet, painted 2 rooms and starting the den painting today. the house is the only thing we fight about- but i'm making progress. you are right about compromise- its both peoples' home- and nothing is worse than not feeling at home in your home!

i did this for years before moving in together in march (and his/our house is being CURED as we speak). i learned the hard way that i must keep these things at his house: tampons, toothbrush, coffee, phone charger, loungey clothes, one work appropriate outfit. i also found it helped if i bought really nice luxurious stuff to keep there- it lessened the blow of not being with my stuff and in my house that i loved.

I also get some pretty good ideas from Cottage Living, which was initially surprising because I don't consider myself a cottage-y person. Turns out a lot of my friends read it too!

i'm with wonderboy- i thought my time spent in a horse barn was finally going to pay off!
you know, maybe we still need them. the mounted police here let their horses poop everywhere, which makes sitting outside at a cafe in the summer time occasionally very, um, fragrant. what do mounted police do about poo in other cities?

let's not forget where you put that house. 900 sf or 2400 sf, if it is still in the burbs you are most likely to need to drive everywhere, and not be within walking distance of things like cafes and parks and other third places that make small living a more viable option. we've got a lot of the tools to solve this crisis without the tech solutions.
if you look at maps of foreclosures you'll notice a large number of them are in the exurbs. and nobody is talking about it.

i have a hard time using my bike or bus instead of my car to get to work. its hard to make myself get up early enough to make that feasible. but i really want to commit to doing it at least 1 day a week. a post on helpful commuter gear and where to store your bike in your apartment would be good!
